WEEK OF JANUARY 14-18, 2019
DALLAS ISD SCHOOL BOARD OF TRUSTEES
NATIONAL SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNITION MONTH!
January is School Board Recognition Month—a great time to focus on the crucial role an elected board of trustees plays in our communities and schools. Plan now to show your school board members you appreciate their dedication and hard work. They are extraordinary people who voluntarily tackle the enormous job of governing school districts. Their actions and decisions affect the present and future lives of our children.
This year’s theme is “Planting Seeds of Success.” Dallas ISD trustees do that by not only making districtwide policy and purchasing decisions at monthly meetings but also by visiting schools and talking with constituents in their individual districts.
Overall, school boards are charged with establishing a vision for a district’s education program, designing a structure to achieve that vision, ensuring that schools are accountable to the community, and advocating for continuous improvement in student achievement.
Recognizing board members for this commitment and sacrifice takes a combined effort on the part of all those they serve: administrators, school staff, students, and the community. Although showing appreciation should be a year-round process, taking advantage of the designated School Board Recognition Month in January assures that these important people receive some of the thanks they deserve.
TRUSTEES SERVING THE NORTHWEST CLUSTER CAMPUSES
THANK YOU TRUSTEES FOR ALL YOU DO FOR OUR SCHOLARS IN THE NORTHWEST ELEMENTARY CLUSTER! YOU ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Remembering the Great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
An idea of honoring Dr. Martin Luther King would be to have your campus view a video (button below) immediately after announcements next week. Teachers would be able to segue into further instruction aligned to the speech after the class viewing.
I am attaching a YouTube link to this message below ( blue button) for you to watch the speech in its entirety in order for you to determine how you would want to implement the video on your campus. The entire video is 17 minutes long. Students from 3rd-5th would find watching the video in its entirety incredibly powerful. He starts the "I Have a Dream" portion at the 10:50 marker, that section would be more applicable for students in PK-2.

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Illustrious Leaders,
What an awesome day we had yesterday in our Network Cluster meeting. The emphasis on data, writing and Blended Learning was a great way to start our academic year off.
Thank you for your participation and your growth mindset!
It is that time of year that you have many data sets to assist your campuses with creating “ACTION PACKED NEXT STEPS.” Remember that the action plans for improvement created for your campus TEACHERS AND LEADERS will yield positive student results at the end of the academic school year when they are implemented and monitored with fidelity.
STAAR assessments are fast approaching. It is crucial that leadership makes certain that all curriculum and instruction are aligned to maximize student achievement. This week your campus leadership team began to meet with your teachers to discuss data and Teacher Actions Plans. What did the discussion look like regarding Leader Action Plans? Please ensure systems are in place to support your leadership team with aggressive monitoring of teacher action plans according to relevant data. This will only occur if your leadership team is present in the classrooms monitoring the action plans daily. How is data supporting small group instruction? Is change occurring in the classrooms? If not, what will you do as a leader to ensure that change is occurring and occurring NOW?
Our feeder has much work to be done and principal leadership will be the key to the success on each campus as well as the work we do as a feeder pattern. This work occurs through carrying out the campus vision, campus action plans for teachers and leaders, dedication to analysis of data daily to target student misconceptions, and drive "Good First Instruction"-lesson delivery. Support your CIC's and protect their schedules so that they can continue providing high leverage, effective, on the spot, live feedback, executed immediately and monitored daily for sustainability in ALL the classrooms.
Also, we must think of creative ways to be intentional with RTI to provide proper interventions for ALL scholars. Spiraling and bundling high leverage SE's (Readiness standards and standards that have been tested multiple times and/or embedded in multiple skills) in you instructional calendar to be taught at least three weeks prior to STAAR administration, will allow the last weeks to serve as a review.
Last, ensure that scholars are profiling their own progress weekly. This practice for will enable them to create STAAR goals, identifying strengths and weaknesses to achieve their OWN academic success. This is not a simple task. However, embracing these practices will yield the expected gains. Our scholars deserve the best! This begins with US!
Have a wonderful week of teaching and learning!
