Week of February 17, 2020
I hope everyone got plenty of rest but also had fun during the long weekend. It's always nice to have that extra time with family and to make it even better, it didn't rain!
We had a lot of fun at the end of our week last week with our annual valentines dance! Thank you to the MSO for putting on such a fun event for our students! Please be sure to check out the fun picture gallery of the dance below and thank you to Mr. Mutcali for capturing such fun and energetic photos.
I am excited to say that one of our 2020 Seniors and this year's graduating class Valedictorian Charlie Furniss has advanced as a Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program 2020. The selection process will narrow down 7,500 Merit Scholarship winners from the group of ~15,000 finalists. Best of luck to Charlie! High School Science Olympiad Wins 1st Place at LaGrange College Invitational
The FSA Science Olympiad team traveled to LaGrange College on Saturday to compete in the LaGrange Invitational. The team took first place in 15 events on its way to winning the team trophy. “This was the first tournament ever hosted by the College,” said head coach Pam Walsh, “so we really didn’t know what to expect, but it turned out great! It was the smallest tournament we have been to this year and since it was so small, the tournament director agreed to allow us to bring some of our middle school students as well.”
“It was interesting to see our middle school students go up against our high schoolers,” said head coach Gloria Stathos. “Our middle school team practices much more, but the high schoolers are taking more advanced classes. There was some friendly competition and our middle schoolers managed to outplace the high schoolers in seven events.”
The following students placed first in their events and were awarded a medal:
- Anatomy and Physiology – Ashi and Brian
- Boomilever – Tanish and Tejash
- Circuit Lab – Brad and Brian
- Code Busters – Shawn, Jungwon, and Brad
- Designer Genes – Ashi and Joon
- Dynamic Planet – Gann and Tejash
- Experimental Design – Navya, Tanish, and Krishna
- Forensics – Sanjana and Madison
- Geologic Mapping – Nick F.
- Machines – Brian and Joon
- Ornithology – Gann and Weston
- Ping Pong Parachute – Aaditya and Akarsh
- Sounds of Music – Nick F. and Brian
- Water Quality – Nick F. and Shourya
- Write It Do It – Charles and Aubrey
FSA ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL ACADEMIC BOWL TEAMS ADVANCE TO THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN CHICAGO; ESHAAN B. BRINGS HOME GOLD
Both the Academic Bowl Elementary Division Team (5th-graders Jack B., Grayson H. and 6th-grader Dheemant P.) and the Middle School Team (6th grader Eshaan B.; 7th graders Alexander R. and Lucas A.; 8th-graders Sanjana K., Peter S., and Weston B.) competed at the 2020 Georgia Academic Bee and Bowl on February 8th where they earned the opportunity to advance to the National Championships in Chicago June 12-15. Eshaan B. also won a gold medal in the Academic Bee.
Coach Bennion explained, “I’m proud of these students! The elementary team was the only team present who had never competed before. In the middle school division, Eshaan (6th grade) and Alex (7th grade) had to hold down the fort against teams consisting of 5-6 eighth graders until their other teammates could be shuttled over through the snowstorm in shifts from the Regional Science Olympiad Competition. The whole team was finally present in the fifth round and won with a score of 430 to 220 against River Trail Middle School.”
In order to qualify to compete in the upcoming Regional National History Bee, National Science Bee, National Academic Bee, and the National Geography Bee the students had to take an online exam and finish in the top 50% in the nation. We have received the scores for the Geography Exam in which all students qualified to compete at the Regional Competition; however, more impressive, all of the students including Nitish A. (6th) and Noah D. (8th) also qualified to compete at the National Geography Bee this summer in Chicago by placing in the top 25% in the nation. Most impressive, four FSA students qualified to compete at the 2020 International Geography Olympiad this summer in Istanbul: Alex R., Lucas A., Noah D., and Weston B.

Pennies for Patients
Dear FSA Families,
Our Elementary Student Council members will be leading our school in efforts to raise money for Pennies for Patients, a member of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Our school has decided to take on blood cancer and our mission is to help raise money to find a cure. Be on the lookout for more information in the upcoming weeks that will allow your child to participate in this rewarding event that emphasizes the importance of social and emotional learning and gaining the experience of helping both children and adults in their fight against blood cancer.
We will kick off our fundraising efforts on Wednesday March 4th. On this day, your students are encouraged to donate $1.00 to dress as their HERO! This small donation will help to start our fundraising efforts and give our students an opportunity to recognize a hero of their own as we work towards becoming heroes together throughout this fundraiser!
What you need to know:
- Who? All FSA students are participating!
- What? Students will be coming home on Friday, February 28th with their own collection box and information about Pennies for Patients. Students should raise as much money as possible in their boxes OR online with our school donation website
- When? This fundraiser will continue from Friday, February 28th to Friday, March 20th

Dr. Seuss Day in Elementary! (March 2nd)
Read Across America Day, also known as Dr. Seuss Day, is a yearly observance in the USA inaugurated by the NEA (National Education Association). It is held on the school day that is nearest to March 2nd, Dr Seuss' birthday. Theodor Seuss Geisel was an American artist, book publisher, animator, poet, a political cartoonist as well as an author. He is best known for authoring over 60 children’s books.
On Monday, March 2nd we will enjoy a full day of fun to celebrate one of our favorite authors... Dr. Seuss! Our elementary (PK-5th grade) students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Dr. Seuss character. However, this is optional. If they are not dressing up as a character, they must be in uniform.
Each grade level will participate in their own activities centered around the stories written by Dr. Seuss, paired with fun and engaging activities.
