Newsletter 12, Week 3 Term 3

Waiau School ⎪ 11th August 2022

Kia ora e te whānau,

What an exciting fortnight, warm balmy Norwester's and then a lovely picturesque snowfall. As an ‘urbanite’ I thought the scenery looked amazing with the covering of snow on the hills surrounding Waiau, but of course, I didn’t have to worry about stock, feeding out and shelter. A long weekend and then straight back into our normal routines as the days begin to draw out.

An annual highlight for students and families at Waiau School is our ski trip, and by the response we have had for volunteers, it is a very popular outing. Thank you to our Board of Trustees for providing the additional funds so we can have a bonus second day up at Mt Lyford this season. I can’t wait to see our students whizzing down the slopes.

Keep warm and dry,

This makes for an amazing day on the mountain as the added support makes all the difference. If your child is travelling with another adult up the mountain we will be asking for permission that you are happy with this arrangement. Transport info will be coming home soon.

Board Elections

As our new Board gets ready to work together it is important to acknowledge the contribution that Henry Pinckney has made over the past 3 years as an active member of our Board. Henry has stepped down and on behalf of Waiau School I would like to thank him for his involvement on the Waiau Board of Trustees.

We would also like to welcome our newest member Sam Armstrong to the team and congratulate Paul and Courtney for their re-election to the board.

Working Bee - 9th September, 2pm

The school will hold a working bee on the 9th of September at 2pm - Students will be involved and help with gardening/weeding. Early BBQ/Sausage sizzle to be held after.

7 Aside (Year 4-6)

This much anticipated annual tournament will take place on 31st August at Hawarden. Some of you will notice that your child/ren may be a wee bit muddy when they get home, they are practising touch rugby at lunchtimes in preparation for the big day! 7 Aside forms will be coming home today.

Last week I was lucky enough to join Room 1 and watch our Year 3 leaders take the rest of the class through the Perceptual Motor Programme. The skills that the students get to complete and practice in the variety of tasks are so beneficial to learning.

Room 1 News

From next Wednesday Mrs Macfarlane will be away for the rest of week 4 and all of week 5. Mrs Ferguson will cover Monday and Tuesday and Mrs Brett will be the Wednesday-Friday teacher for both weeks. We look forward to hearing of Mrs Macfarlane’s adventures on her return.

Room 2 Update

Our new Inquiry is ‘The Circle of Life’ and we will be looking at life cycles of creatures big and small, as well as the odd plant or two!

This week Room 2 students have been practising their public speaking skills as they share their Matariki inquiry projects. We have some very confident presenters and we are looking forward to seeing these great skills being extended next year on stage when we do our whole school production. It has been exciting to see the variety of creative ways that our students have chosen to share their learning with their classmates. We have had animations, video presentations, google slides, posters and a diorama, to name a few.

Ice cream containers:

We are still looking for a supply of 2 litre ice cream containers to have at school. Please send along any spare ice cream containers, thank you.

This Winter a variety of health conditions have impacted our attendance rates. This is to be expected in the current climate, however, we have noticed that recently the number of unexplained absences has risen. We need to know the reason for their absence so we know that they are safe and can code the absence accordingly.

Please help us to keep an accurate track of reasons for non attendance buy either

We will send home information about our Marae trip next week. This year we are heading over to Takahanga on the last week of this term, Thursday 29th of September. On the Friday we plan to visit Hapuka School and we are also trying to arrange a visit to the Paua Hatchery to link in with our topic ‘The Circle of Life’.

Learning hard packs

These packs of learning materials were provided way back in Term 1 and we would like them to be sent back to school so that we can update them. Please send the plastic zip lock bag of school resources back by next Thursday. Your child can keep the photocopied activities- we just require the reading books and maths books back.
