The JC Scholar
Minutes and Moments from the Library Learning Commons at JCS
Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year!
- Always ask permission before using a device. Remember there is no substitute for active monitoring.
- School devices are for school work only.
- Only visit safe places online. These are the places your teacher/parents say are ok to visit within the parameters above.
- Only work with fellow JCS students online. Never connect with strangers and tell a trusted grownup right away if there is an issue.
Please keep in mind that parents are partners in this work, as we must strive to mold our children into super digital citizens together.
"When are iPads Coming Home?"
- All students in grades 1-5 have received their iPads. K iPads are still in process.
- All students in grades K-5 have completed a unit on digital citizenship.
- By the end of October, students in grades 2-5 will have the privilege of bringing their iPads home to support their learning. Three conditions must be met prior to bringing iPads back and forth from school to home and home to school.
1) Completion of the digital citizenship unit.
2) Specific assignment given by teacher. (Remember school iPads are for school work only!)
3) Parents and caregivers need to fill out a liability form, indicating permission for your child to travel with the iPad. If your child is new to the school or your child is a current 2nd grader you MUST fill out a form for the first time. If your child is a returning 3-5th grader and you filled out the form last year, you NEED NOT fill out another UNLESS you've changed your mind about the permissions indicated. Here is the link to the form:
LIABILITY WAIVER FOR DEVICE HOME USE
Families must sign the liability form for each child, using that child's specific student ID. Usernames are as follows: firstname.lastname@greenwichschools.org
Passwords are: initials followed by the 9 digit student ID number.
For more help with passwords please contact Heather McGuinness via email.

GPS Research Tools Page- High Quality, Vetted, Appropriate Resources!
As part of the Digital Citizenship Unit, students are taught to utilize then GPS Research Tools Page to access all of the school's research tools. This is where students can find high quality, vetted, appropriate information and images for school projects or personal learning. Students are taught not to use web browers (such as Google & Safari) to do their searching.
DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP WEEK
Digital Citizenship Week is October 15-19, 2018. One thing you can do as a family is make a pledge to have a "Device Free Dinner".
