In The Know
Assignments Due - Please be sure that you are making your assignments due on Sundays. This is direction from the district office that needs to be uniform as students and families have difficult schedules and we are trying to accommodate for the inconveniences that families and students face. All assignments need to be assigned at the beginning of the week and due on Sundays.
Penalties for Late Work - There should be no penalties for late work. Please do not create this barrier to students during a global quarantine. It is not appropriate to do this in this climate. The only grades we are offering right now are P and INC. This means we should be accepting all work - late and on-time.
Ask your students for feedback - As you plan and deliver instruction to your students, poll them. Gather data on how long on average it is taking students to finish your class work. It will be a good guide to you as you prepare lessons in the future. We need to see what students are experiencing and making sure that the work we assign is on par with our expectations for how much time a student is spending on their work.
Library Services - Thank you Amy Page for joining us at our last staff meeting. Below are some resources for your consideration:
- Chat helpline where I can be reached 9-4/M-F.
- Teacher help drop-in time is here
- If teachers aren't sure how to use me (Amy Page), they can check out this Menu of LIbrarian Services.
- Newsletter: Library Lowdown with all of these resources and more. If teachers click the "Follow Amy Page" button future newsletters will be delivered directly to their inbox.
Updated (4/16) College Now Guidance for Spring 2020
1. The College Now option remains alive and well in situations where all course learning outcomes can still be met. We realize that this may be challenging in some situations as districts grapple with constraints on instructional time, available technology, remote attendance, etc.
2. College Now instructors should feel free to reach out to their LCC course faculty leads (contact information at link below) with questions, and for suggestions and support regarding course learning outcomes and expectations. The High School Connections team is also available to support you.
3. College Now will continue to require letter grading (A-F), which we strongly believe is in the best interest of students. Feel free to reach out to me directly if you would like a full rationale. It is perfectly appropriate per the Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) for students to receive a "Pass" grade for the high school course on the high school transcript and a standard letter grade (A-F) for the College Now course on the college transcript.
4. We continue our approach of "maximum flexibility" with regard to instructional delivery, teaching resources, and modified assessments. Please consult with your LCC course faculty lead with questions.
5. LCC Tutoring and academic resources are available to all College Now students (requires L# and email address that is checked regularly): https://www.lanecc.edu/tutor
6. The deadline for College Now student course registration is May 22. The college will offer enhanced flexibility this spring with course drops required after this date if warranted by extenuating circumstances such as a case where an instructor makes a good faith effort to offer the College Now course, but determines too late that it will not be possible to meet all learning outcomes. Contact: Khristina Fuller (fullerkj@lanecc.edu).
7. College Now main page: https://www.lanecc.edu/collegenow This site Includes links to contact information for LCC course faculty leads, tutoring options, College Now application and registration instructions, including a new instructional video, and so much more.
Senior Attendance
Over the next few days, we will be entering a "leave date" for all seniors who have received a "P" for their classes and no longer need to engage in coursework. This will remove Seniors from attendance for these classes.
1) Seniors with a "P" will be removed from the class in Synergy but will not be removed from Google Classroom automatically.
2) Seniors who need to complete coursework to meet graduation requirements will be marked as absent on Friday if they have not engaged with the teacher during the week.
3) Any senior marked absent for a course will receive an autodialer on Friday afternoon regarding their attendance.
4) If you are a senior in a College Now (CN) course and are taking the course for CN credit, please notify your teacher as soon as possible so you can remain in the Synergy class and Gradebook.
5) For students who have already received a "P" and are engaged in coursework out of choice, you will be removed from Synergy but can remain in the Google Class for instructional and engagement purposes. Some teachers have Google Classroom automatically synced to Synergy, if you are removed from a Google Class but do not want to be please email your teacher to be re-added.
6) All seniors must remain in Advisory to be able to access senior and school-wide information. You are not required to participate in the weekly assignments.
Kudos
Kym Ramsing - Thank you for your work on capturing attendance as we figure out this distance learning thing. It's overwhelming and you are maintaining clarity in the turbulent moment. Thank you for your focus.
Sarah Woods - Deserves a huge kudo for all her work with coordinating and organizing Specially Designed Instruction for our students receiving special services. Your commitment to students and your enthusiasm for helping the team is contagious and true Churchill spirit. Thank you Sarah.
Students teachers - Lilly Loftin and Liane Davis have both been learning by doing in grand style. Student teaching is a tough endeavor and to weather the experience in quarantine is saying something in and of itself. You are trailblazers in this new arena. Thank you for all of your hard work. It is appreciated and we are proud to have you be a part of our family.
Long Term Sub - Johnathon Lehman Winters has been subbing for Mike Sterling. I wanted to recognize him for his hard work and developing new lessons in this crazy distance learning environment. Thank you for sticking with it and bringing your best forward. Churchill is proud to have you with us, as is Mike Sterling and most importantly, the kids.
