World of Art
Grades 3-5
The World of Art studio is a flurry of activity as we bring this school year to a close. The second phase of ceramics for Grades 3-5 has our students glazing their ceramic creations. Our 5th graders are making "Sole" pendants. They will be used during the End of Year Celebration on May 31 and be a keepsake from their years at HES. Our 4th graders "Big Mouth Creatures" will be on display starting Wednesday, May 3, in the Learning Commons. Be sure to take a peek at these amazing works of art! The 3rd grade "Pinch Pots" are spectacular! The students have put so much love and thought into their projects, and with Mother's Day just around the corner, some of you may receive an original, one-of-a-kind ceramic work of art!
Grades K-2:
Kindergarten flower pots, 1st grade insect self-portraits, and 2nd grade bird sculptures should be complete and on display by the end of this week in the common area by the Cafeteria. Spring never looked brighter or more colorful!!!
If you are interested in being a World of Art studio volunteer, please send an email to me at pamela.duncan@gcisd.net.
Music
The HES Eagle Choir performed their program, "Broadway Beat" on Thursday, May 4. Congratulations to the fourth and fifth grade choir students on a fabulous performance!
It has been a pleasure to get to know your children this year! They have blown me away with their musical talent, and I have loved working with them! I can't wait to see how much more they can do in the music room in the years to come!
I also want to take a moment to thank all of the parent volunteers who have helped me this year with stage decorations for the music programs. The shows would not have been complete without your help!

Fitness Friday
Thank you to everyone who came out to help the kids on their last Fitness Friday of the year! It was a wonderful day with fabulous weather!Field Day
Field Day is going to be here before we know it!
Date: Thursday - May 25, 2017
This year I've decided on a Summer Camp theme! Many of the games or activities that the kids will be doing are activities they might enjoy while away at summer camp!
We've been working hard to prepare quite the day for the kids, and we know it will be a lot of fun for everyone. We look forward to seeing everyone at Field Day!
Please remember to have your student wear their Field Day shirt that day. If a student does not own one, please make sure they are wearing their classes color:
Kindergarten: Blue
1st: Orange
2nd: Purple
3rd: Green
4th: Red
5th: Yellow

GCISD Reads
Thank you to everyone who participated in the reading challenge! I sincerely hope each student enjoyed reading and grew as a reader this year! Students who completed the challenge will enjoy a special celebration in the Learning Commons this month.
Book Swap
Does your child have lots of books he/she has already read? Would he/she like something new to read over the summer? If you answered YES to these questions, the HES Book Swap is for you!
Students may bring books they would like to swap to the Learning Commons any time before the swap date. 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will swap books on May 30, and Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade will swap books on May 31.
For every book your child brings, he/she will pick a "new to them" book.
The following are guidelines for the types of books that can be swapped:
- The books should be gently used and in good condition.
- The books should be a title other students will want to read.
- The reading material should be appropriate for your student's grade level.
- Please do not send deleted library books, Chick-fil-a books, religious books, books that show lots of wear and tear, etc. Remember, other students will swap for these books.
Library Books
I cannot believe it is that time of year, but library books are due May 12. The Learning Commons will remain open for class visits, lessons, and end of the year activities. Teachers can still check out books for students to use in the classroom. This due date allows time for all books to be found and returned before the end of the school year.
