Become a Canvas Observer!
Last Thursday, your middle school student should have sent you an email about becoming a Canvas Observer. Starting this school year, all 6th-12th grade courses will be housed in a singular learning management system called Canvas. In Canvas, the “Observer” role is used for parents to allow them to see what is going on in their student’s courses. Use the attached guide to set up your Canvas observer account using the student pairing code from each of your students. Click here to create an account and log into Canvas: platteco.instructure.com/login/canvas.
You can then set up your notification preferences or log into Canvas to see the Dashboard of what is happening in all your student's courses. Within Canvas, you can see assignment details, submissions, comments, and more. Official grades are then posted to PowerSchool. Contact the school if you have any questions.
PCR-3 Community Advisory: Apply by September 25
Platte County School District recognizes the importance of community input to help set the future direction of our schools. We will be kicking off another year of the PCR-3 Community Advisory by gathering volunteers who will have an ongoing role to review the District’s progress toward its Comprehensive Strategic Improvement Plan goals, as well as to provide input regarding the District's general operation and specific issues impacting education activities and programs. Any District resident, employee, or student may participate in the ongoing work of this group.
We have reached out to existing members about continuing their participation and are now opening membership up to new members. If interested in serving on this advisory, please complete the application linked here by September 25. The first General Membership meeting will be held October 3.
SAVE THE DATE: Parent/Teacher Conferences - In-Person & Virtual, November 1 & 2
Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, November 1 and Thursday, November 2. We are offering both in-person and virtual options for conferences. This is a very important time for parents to discuss their student's progress with his/her teachers, as research has shown that parental involvement is one of the most important factors in a student's success in school. Please see the schedule below (buildings and teachers will be communicating specifics for reserving time slots).
- Wednesday, November 1, 3:30-7:30pm and Thursday, November 2, 3:30-7:00pm: Platte City Middle School, Platte Purchase Middle School Platte County High School, Northland Career Center
Treasure Chest Registration Information
The Treasure Chest is our school district resource center. It is a stocked pantry providing food, clothing, toiletries, and other household supplies. All items in the Treasure Chest are free to PCR-3 students and families who participate in the Free or Reduced School Lunch Program. The Treasure Chest is open for shopping every week of the calendar year on Wednesday evenings from 4pm-6pm.
Families must register at the following link or call 816.858.7001 weekly so we can appropriately plan for resources. Once approved, families can drive through at the original Treasure Chest site (in the north parking lot of PCHS). Identification must be provided in order to receive food.
Use the link below in the button to register.

Help Us Knock Out Teen Vaping
Teen vaping rates are declining in the Kansas City Northland! We’ve knocked vaping down to just 6%, and it’s all thanks to you! More adults and teens know vaping is harmful to growing brains, and highly addictive, especially for young people under age 25. We’ve got teen vaping on the ropes, so let's knock it out for good.
To help prevent our kids from vaping, we can have conversations about our vape-free expectations early and often. We can warn teens of the risks, set the expectation they remain vape-free, and give them confidence to say “no” to their peers. Remind your kids that they can come to you for help with peer pressure, stress, or anxiety. Parent Up KC is here to help too! Take action to help knock out teen vaping at ParentUpKC.com/Vaping.

Chromebook Insurance 💻
Have you signed up for Chromebook Insurance yet? Click the button below for updated information and to get your student signed up for insurance. This is truly a money saver and we strongly encourage all of our families to purchase insurance.
Student Drinks at School
As a reminder, students are allowed to have water bottles with them during the day. We have several water bottle filling stations located throughout the school that students can use all day. We do ask that their bottles have a sealed lid to help contain spills and messes and that they are not glass. One thing that we are asking your help with this year is not having students bring in the QT, Sonic, Starbucks, energy drinks, etc. into school in the mornings. If they do bring that into school, they will be asked to take it to the cafeteria to finish and not to their classrooms. We appreciate your help with this!

PirateStrong - Commitment and Pride
This year we are happy to be combining our wonderful PiratesROCK with our CharacterStrong. Both of these programs motivate and teach our students how to become the best versions of themselves.
We'll be sharing family dares and different activities in the newsletter that can help you support this work at home!
This week's character dare for our students is just getting them to SIMPLIFY a task that might feel too big to accomplish.
PIRATES ROCK CHARACTER TRAIT: PRIDE (SEPTEMBER)
Pirates R.O.C.K. (Raising Outstanding Character Kids) is a program designed to surround our families with examples of strong character traits through school experiences, at home, and reinforced in their community. Each month our community focuses on a specific character trait and students are recognized for exhibiting these traits: Self Confidence, Pride, Responsibility, Citizenship, Compassion, Individuality, Self Control, Integrity, Perseverance, Respect, Honesty, and Cooperation.
September's #PiratesROCK trait is PRIDE: a feeling of self respect & worth.
Character Strong connections to PRIDE:
- Self-awareness
- Social Awareness
- Commitment
- Humility
