Growing with STEM in Fourth Grade

We are truly humbled by the generosity and hard work that went into planning, funding, and installing Cannon's new outdoor learning garden. In the morning, our fourth grade scholars participated in creating a feature for the garden using keys, and in the afternoon, they got their hands dirty by planting a variety of seeds and plants, including mustard, blue kale, collard greens, broccoli, carrots, and peas! Thank you to all who were able to volunteer and participate in the Big Dig! We are so excited to see the growth of our scholars as they create meaningful connections with our 'Real School Garden.'

What We're Learning

Math- Comparing and adding decimals to the hundredths

Science- Water Cycle

Reading- Practicing problem solving when what they are reading does not make sense

Social Studies- Researching to understand the impact of geography on different American Indian groups in Texas

Writing- Applying criteria to evaluate the quality of writing texts and discussing how to improve them

Field Trip - Grapevine Water Treatment Plant

Last Wednesday, scholars toured the Grapevine Wastewater Treatment Plant. They learned all about the chemical and filtration methods used to treat the water! At this plant, 4.5 million gallons for drinking water are treated per day. They manage two to three plants, seven filters, and four water towers that they fill up twice per day to deliver a safe and adequate supply of drinking water to Grapevine!

Words Their Way Spelling

This past week, scholars began the Words Their Way word study program for their spelling instruction. Here's how it works:
  • Monday - Scholars will sort their words and receive practice lists.
  • Homework - Practice on SpellingCity App or Spelling City
  • Friday - Test will include 10 words from the practice list and 4 mystery words that follow the spelling pattern.
  • Students will sort their words into categories as part of the test.

Please drop off your child at Grapevine Methodist Church Parking lot or Dogwood Dr (Across from Baylor) between 7:00-7:15 am. Staff will be waiting to walk with students. Parents are more than welcome to walk with us too!

International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration – with record-breaking participation – each October. Today, thousands of schools across America – from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico – participate every October.

iPad Reminders

Just a few reminders about our iPads. Please be sure to have your scholars power down and charge their iPads daily. Also, please have your scholar keep a pair of headphones or earbuds with them in their backpacks. There are a number of activities on their iPads such as spelling tests where earbuds or headphones are needed. If a scholar comes to school without their iPads charged or without their headphones they may not be able to participate in our daily activities. We thank you in advance and appreciate your help in ensuring that your scholars are prepared for school.
