Cedar Grove Friday Flash
October 15, 2021
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
It was wonderful to see so many of our families come to our Welcome Back to School picnic last Wednesday evening. It was so nice to spend time together as a community and to have time to visit with one another. Many thanks to Sonal Purohit and Jordan Beckwith and all those who assisted with making this event possible.
Beginning the second half of October, schools will begin the process of converting air conditioning to heat. As the weather gets colder, please be sure your child is dressed appropriately and warmly, as the children will continue to go outdoors for recess if the temperature is above 32 degrees. For more information, please see this A/C to Heat Changeover flyer (Oct 14, 2021)
Our school is partnering with Weis Market in the Weis 4 School program. If you would like to participate in the program to help raise funds for our school as you grocery shop, please see the information here . If you are already participating in this program, we appreciate your support!
We continue to look for someone who would be willing to serve our students as a lunch/recess aide. This is a paid position and would require two or two and a half hours per day each week. If you or someone you know is interested, please call Penny German at 240-740-6190. Thank you!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Mr. Derby and Mrs. German

Parents of 5th Grade Students from Mrs. Spoales, School Counselor:
I hope you are doing well! MCPS offers enriched and accelerated programming in both the local middle school and regional middle school magnet programs (Grades 6-8). The Middle School Magnet Consortium (MSMC) is comprised of three magnet themed middle schools. The MSMC is interest based, and our 5th graders are eligible to apply on Google. Placement is by a lottery. The MSMC schools include Argyle, Loiederman, and Parkland middle schools. There are two criteria-based magnet programs located both upcounty and downcounty, and the program includes both Humanities and Communication and Math, Science, and Computer Science. A student's home elementary school determines their eligibility for the location. This video has an overview of the three programs, interviews with the magnet coordinator and student reps, and a FAQ at the end. Please reach out to Erin Spoales, School Counselor, with any questions.
The Great Book Character Pumpkin Event
Thank you to our four students who have sent in pictures of their decorated book character pumpkins! But for this to be the video we're hoping for, we need a lot more entries! Please see the flyer that outlines the directions for your student's participation! All photographs of decorated pumpkins are due to Mrs. Hirschhorn by Friday, October 22.
Holiday Giving Assistance Program

Substitute Teachers Still Needed!
MCPS is seeking substitute teachers! Substitute teaching is an excellent way to learn about our schools while allowing principals and teachers to get to know you. To qualify as a substitute teacher, each applicant must present proof of the completion of the minimum of an associate's degree or 60 college credits from an accredited institution.
Substitute teachers are temporary employees and are on an on call basis. An automated substitute calling system helps you manage your work schedule by allowing you to call at any time, day or night, to find jobs. This system is telephone and internet accessible. The system uses your subject area and location preferences to offer you jobs on the days you have selected and allows you to change the days you work.
Substitute Teacher Rates: Daily hourly rate of pay $18.79- Long Term rate $26.81.
If you hold a valid Maryland professional eligibility certificate or standard advanced professional certificate, the daily hourly rate of pay is $19.97-Long Term rate $28.45. In order to qualify for this higher rate of pay, you must submit a copy of your valid Maryland certificate.
