Reflections and Transitions
Reflections allow you to transform ideas into reality. Remember that reflection is an important part of the learning process and that through deep reflection you are able to think and react in ways that impact all those with whom you come in contact.
Reflection is also a great tool and resource that allows us to transition successfully. I wish each of you an effortless transition to your well-deserved summer vacation and a successful transition to the opening of school in September.
Remember, be BRAVE enough to be kind and have the courage to care!

Jericho Middle School is a No Place for Hate School!
The SEEDlings elective worked diligently this year to secure the designation of Jericho Middle School as a No Place for Hate school through the Anti-Defamation League. They were charged with facilitating three schoolwide events to educate about bias behavior and language. In October in collaboration with our GSA we celebrated LGBTQ History Month, hosting a Pride and Rainbow Art Show, National Coming Out Day, and assemblies about allyship with Hudson Taylor from Athlete Ally. In February in partnership with the Black History Forum, we helped to create a hyperdoc of Black History Month activities, an assembly with author Cheryl Willis, and organized Black student voices panels for students and staff. In May, SEEDlings students designed a lesson plan on microaggressions which was taught in every social studies class and was followed up in grade level assemblies. The leadership committee for this project had the opportunity to share this work at the No Place for Hate awards ceremony in New York City as well and they brought back to JMS a beautiful No Place for Hate banner.
Connect to this work, Sophie Gershwind won The Alexander Bodini Prize for Diversity from the ADL which is awarded each year to an elementary, middle school, and high school student who has exhibited extraordinary leadership in the effort to make their school No Place For Hate. The entire SEEDlings class was involved in every aspect of helping us to achieve the designation of Jericho Middle School as No Place for Hate. What made Sophie stand out was her unending enthusiasm for this work, her willingness to take herself out of her comfort zone as we learned about ourselves and others, and the empathy that she expressed on every step of this journey. Sophie has decided to donate the $1000 prize to the Sid Jacobson JCC where she volunteers during the summer as a camp counselor working with underprivileged youth and to the ADL so they can continue this important work.
Classroom News!
Team 6A:
Students in Team 6A became experts in the different forms Energy Transfer. In math student have learned about Measures of Center and Measures of Variation through both practice and song. We played Taylor Swifts “Mean” when referring to finding the mean of a data set and Zedd/Maren Morris’ “The Middle” when talking about medianJ In Social Studies, students on Team 6A are emulating Silk Road travelers with the help of an interactive game board made by Mrs. Conklin, our school librarian. Along this game board are interactive websites where students can acquire tons of information about the Silk Road. In ELA, students are beginning to write their own argumentative essays on a topic of their choice.
Team 6B:
Team 6B scientists explored conduction. convection, and radiation. They designed experiments to determine the fastest way to melt an ice cube. After trying a hair dryer, melting plates, and some other methods, we found that convection worked the most quickly for us. Ask your child exactly what we did to melt the ice cube in the shortest amount of time!
Team 6C:
Our team entered a Memorial Day Essay contest sponsored by Assemblyman Charles Lavine and Samara Benjamin was nominated as the first place winner. Congratulations! We had a positive day cheering for our classmates in the Mini-Olympics. In S.S. we are working on a Silk Road project. Be sure to check out our Weebly webpages to see our published work in June. In ELA our unit of Poetry has a culminating Chinese watercolor landscapes with our Haiku poetry. In Science students answered the, "How does thermal energy affect chemical reactions in glow sticks?"
Team 6D:
Team 6D has been busy putting our engineering skills to work! We used what we have learned about gravity to design and construct roller coasters and hot chocolate machines using the engineering and design process. We love to explore new ways to solve a problem and can’t wait to see what the next STEAM challenge brings!!
Team 6E:
Team 7A:
On Thursday, May 16th students from Team 7A visited the National Historic Park in Philadelphia. While in Philadelphia students viewed the Liberty Bell, toured Congress Hall, saw original copies of the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution, and engaged in an interactive tour of the Museum of the American Revolution, where they viewed George Washington’s war tent. The students had a great time learning about our nation’s history!
Team 7B:
Team 7B embarked on our annual journey to Philadelphia, the birthplace of our nation. Included in the itinerary was a visit to the National Constitution Center. After watching an engaging performance that brought "We the People" to life, students participated in a hands-on museum experience focusing on teaching the Constitution using interactive techniques. Other highlights of our trip was Signers Hall which included life-size statues of the signers of the Constitution and witnessing the tent George Washington used while fighting in the American Revolution. A good time was had by all!
Team 7C:
Team 7C is learning about Geometry and its connection to the real world. Through investigation, we’ve discovered the volume formulas for prisms and cylinders. We identified uses of surface area and volume in our everyday lives, like figuring out which popcorn container uses the least amount of material and provides the same amount of popcorn. We were also able to transfer our knowledge to regents level geometry questions and loved the challenge!
Team 8A:
Students on 8A kicked off their Memorial Day weekend attending a school wide basketball competition between staff members and students. The students held on strong to their winning streak! This event was organized to raise money for "Hoops for Little Hearts." Win or lose this event was enjoyed by all who attended!
Team 8B:
Team 8B students in Algebra class using Flipgrid to communicate their findings on a performance task involving regression models and residuals.
Team 8C:
In Algebra, students have been conducting their own surveys as part of our Statistics unit. Geometry students have learning how to apply volume and surface area formulas to 3D figures in the world around us.

Tips from the School Nurse
I Wish You Enough…. (unknown author)
I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.
I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye.
Have a Great Summer !!!!!
With love, appreciation and much Happiness,
Regina Rosenfeld
