Katy ISD Class of 2019 Awards of Excellence
Below are the Awards of Excellence winners for the Class of 2019:
At Large - Monica Arrambide Valdes selecting Mr. McCauley
When she was younger, she lived in Mexico. For a time, she was raised by her grandma due to her parents’ jobs. After moving to the United States when she was seven, she had to quickly learn a new language to accommodate to a new culture and fit in. She tried hard and became extremely dedicated to her academics and extracurricular activities. She tried her best at school in order to make her parents proud.
Mr. McCauley is an exceptional person. There hasn’t been a day where I haven’t seen him smile; he’s always ready to greet his students and join a conversation. He’s helped me see the potential I have, while motivating me to never stop trying no matter how tough times get.
She plans to attend Texas A&M University and major in computer engineering.
At Large - Samuel Oladejo selecting Ms. Reed
Samuel enjoys making films, acting in theatre, and writing scripts for both. He is a hard worker, and doesn’t like to let people down. He loves to make people smile and believes laughter really is the best medicine. Samuel appreciates his parents for supporting him and his passions and is grateful to his friends who stuck with him through the years.
Ms. Reed has been Samuel’s teacher for three years. She was there when he first discovered theatre and scriptwriting and still encourages him to write today. She got him to enter his first film competition despite his lack of confidence. Samuel appreciates having had her support for so long.
Samuel plans to attend the University of Texas and double major in film and physics.
LOTE - Ayotoluwafunmi Osunsade selecting Mrs. House
Growing up with a name that is literally a sentence (translated to: “the joy that God has given me”), Ayotoluwafunmi, dubbed with the nickname, “Tolu”, along with her other interests such as sports, photography, and science, has always had a peaked curiosity in linguistics. One language that specifically caught her eye at a young age was American Sign Language, the extremely expressive, yet almost silent language. ASL transformed her concept of what communication could be.
A Japanese Proverb once stated, “Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher.” Anyone who has come in contact with Mrs. Mary Lee House knows that she surpasses anyone’s expectations for not only an outstanding educator, but human. She’s an inspiration for all.
She plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin and double major in Biology and Psychology.
CTE - Stephannie Gomez selecting Mr. Hughes
Stephannie is very proud to be nominated for this award. She’s worked very hard these past 4 years and she’s dedicated herself to raising animals every year for FFA and her studies. With this award she would like to say thank you to everyone for supporting her constantly and pushing her to do her best at everything.
Mr. Hughes has been a role model, amazing teacher, and has helped her these past years. He showed her support in her projects for FFA and was there to answer her questions. He pushed her to be the best she could be and makes her strive to be better at FFA.
She plans to attend Lonestar College and then transfer to Texas Christian University to be a Plastic Surgeon.
Math - Gabriel Bell selecting Mrs. Sarin
While his grades may not always show it, he is a formidable AP student. Having a 3.5 GPA in classes that are mostly comprised of 4.0’s and above means you are often overlooked; especially by colleges and other such organizations. He is honored to be selected and considers this a victory for the more average student; proving that you can in fact compete with the upper class ranks, no matter what your report card says.
Gabriel says that Mrs. Sarin never accepts anything less than perfect and pushes her students to their maximum potential while maintaining a sense of humor.
He plans on attending the University of Houston and major in Mathematics.
Science - Owais Ghulam selecting Mrs. Bening
In the spring of 2001, Owais, meaning “Little Wolf” was born. He spent his early years in Alief before eventually moving to Katy. Driven by his curious nature, and obsession with learning, he spent the rest of his childhood focused on school and religious studies. During high school, his scope of learning broadened, now encompassing the study of cultures and traditions around the world, many of which he incorporates into his own life.
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a number of teachers. Though, I have never met a person so personally invested in seeing her students succeed. Mrs. Bening is the epitome of what it means to be a teacher. More than just an instructor, she’s an inspiring, compassionate mentor to all.
Owais Ghulam plans to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Houston.
English - Valeria Quintero Robles selecting Mrs. Dennis
Valeria Quintero was part of the English as a Second Language Program during her freshman year of high school. Although she craved to express her ideas with her peers, she was not able to communicate with them. Since then, Valeria has written two New Adult novels in English, with six other projects in the works. She aspires to become a fulltime author, sharing fictional characters and worlds of her making with readers across the globe.
Lydia Dennis is an outstanding teacher not only for her capability to challenge students’ literary analysis, but her compassion and devotion for literature enthusiasts in general. She creates a welcoming environment through her optimism and dedication, making her one of the highlights of Mayde Creek High School.
Valeria Quintero Robles plans to attend Lone Star Community College to obtain an Associate’s degree in Political Science.
Social Studies - Brooke Chippi selecting Mr. Jones
Brooke is a hardworking student who finds great interest in political and social issues, as well as the economy. She has been an active member of her school’s theatre company for the entirety of her time in high school and holds an officer position in her Senior year. She has dedicated countless hours every year to putting on amazing productions with a group of people she greatly admires.
Mr. Jones has exceeded expectations when it comes to teaching through his drive for engaging students in coursework and his commitment to student’s understanding. He’s easily one of the most dedicated teachers at Mayde Creek and is very passionate about his career, which is clear to all of his students.
She plans to attend Sam Houston State University and major in Forensic Chemistry.
Fine Arts - Dane Magruder selecting Mr. Dolnik
At Mayde Creek, Dane has been involved in musical ensembles such as the Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, Pit Orchestras, and was a Section Leader in the Mighty Ram Marching Band for 2 years. Dane has also participated in Region and All-State ensembles, placing 1st in the state of Texas in 2019. Dane would like to thank his parents, teachers, and friends for helping him become who he is today and encouraging him to pursue excellence.
Mr. Dolnik is an outstanding teacher for many reasons. He expects his students to excel at what they do and encourages them to compete at the highest level all while having a positive attitude and creating a relaxed atmosphere in the classroom
After graduation, Dane plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in Music Performance with a focus on Trombone at a four-year university.
Fine Arts - Gage Evans selecting Mr. Alcala
Gage Evans is a Senior at Mayde Creek High School. He is a 4-year member of Mayde Creek’s varsity choir, Kantori, and 3-year member of their show choir, Taking Notes. Gage has also received superior ratings at both district and state level Solo & Ensemble, as well as becoming a two-time member of the TMEA All-State Tenor-Bass Choir.
Mr. Alcala has been exceptional in the classroom. He is willing to help you succeed and better yourself so you can do what you want and more. He has always offered his service not only as a teacher, but as a friend.
Gage plans to go to college for Vocal Performance.
Fine Arts - Glendaliris Torres Greaux selecting Mr. Gardiner
Glendaliris first made her journey in theatre when she did the MCHS Summer Theatre Workshop in elementary , and ever since , she has never stopped performing. Since that summer camp, she has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Tommy Tunes Awards 2018, won Katy ISD Best Actress at UIL OAP 2018, qualified for the National Thespian Festival receiving superior rankings , and first place in the Greater Houston Teachers of Singing in the Music Theatre High School Senior Category.
The lessons that Mr.Gardiner has taught are invaluable. He is a person that it is easy to trust, to confide in everything, and takes time from his day to make sure that every student has a smile on their face. He has been an influential person in my life ,and has influenced my life into being the best at anything that I set out to be.
Glendaliris Torres-Greaux plans on to pursue Theatre performance at Sam Houston State University , and hopes to one day become a performer.
Fine Arts - Andrea Perez Curiel selecting Mr. Rodriguez
Andrea is very appreciative to be nominated and selected for this award because she feels that she has worked hard all 4 years of high school, and has dedicated herself to her art and school work as well. To be awarded is a way of saying to everyone that has pushed her to be where she is today, a thank you, and sincerest gratitude for never doubting her.
Andrea believes that Mr. Rodriguez has been an outstanding teacher to her these past years, having given her guidance in her life as it pertains to what she hopes to study. He is one of the few teachers who supported her and pushed her to be the artist she is today.
She plans on attending Texas State University and studying to be an art educator.
Event photos will be posted in the 5/19/19 newsletter.
