Gideon v. Wainwright
(1963)
Issue
Gideon did not have a lawyer to represent himself. Thus, he had to represent himself at court. This went against the 6th amendment. Later, he applied for Habeas Corpus and that was because he had face unlawful imprisonment, but he was denied.
Decision
Mr. Gideon was found guilty with a voting of 9 to 0. For a sentence of 5 years.
Impact
This further enforced the precedent idea that all serious criminal cases could be viewed as "special" or that the people/ defendant did not have any actual rights as a citizen under the 14th and was therefore unlawfully imprisoned.
