Greetings Caruso Families,
CMS continues to be a supporter of technology and its potential to transform education. It is always healthy to reflect on the distinction between educational uses of technology and social uses of technology. There is an appropriate time for students to establish social media profiles many of which require users to be at least 13 years of age. We appreciate all that you do to reinforce this expectation in your homes.
Posts that are made outside of school hours can carry over into school. At times our students may use social media in a way that can be harmful to themselves or others. A great resource the district has partnered with in the past to help parents navigate these issues with their children is Dr. Devorah Heitner (check out her blog on her “Raising Digital Natives” website). In DPS109 we utilize Nearpod Common Sense Media lessons as one of many ways to promote appropriate and successful digital citizenship. We encourage you to be aware of your child’s social media activity.
On a related note, Mrs. Paul and I plan to address each grade level prior to winter break on the importance of safe texting. We will specifically address sexting and how it has impacted a number of schools (including middle schools) in our immediate area. You may click here to preview the presentation. If you wish for your child to not participate, please notify me by the end of this week.
Sincerely,
Brian Bullis
1st/FINAL Posting - Quarter One Attendance
We experienced some impressive progress in regards to our attendance from quarter one over the past year (see graphic below) . Our goal for the end of the year is a 20% reduction in students missing a total of 15 or more days. Great trends!
Thank you for all of your efforts to support these improvements.
1st/FINAL Posting - Winter MAP Testing
Next week we will be taking part in our winter MAP assessments. We are consolidating all of our testing into two specific windows on the mornings of Monday, December 5th, and Thursday, December 8th. Everything you can do to promote and support stellar attendance is appreciated in order to avoid missed instructional time for make-ups.
1st/FINAL Posting - Odds and Ends From the CMS Office
If your child needs to leave school early please send a note with them in the morning. We can then provide them with a pass and avoid the need to interrupt class to pull them out.
2nd/FINAL Posting - Subscribe to CMS News and Announcements
2nd/FINAL Posting - Parent Survey: Please Share Your Thoughts About Caruso Middle School
Please click here to take the survey.
If you have children in more than one school, please take the survey for each school. Visit the District 109 home page, or the the News icon on the app for more details. You also can click on the For Parents icon on the app for a link to the survey.
4th/FINAL Posting - PTO Teacher Holiday Gift Fund
Looking for great teachers' gifts for the holidays? The PTO has the perfect answer. Contribute to the Teachers' Holiday Gift Fund!
It's easy.....please click on this Revtrak link https://carusomspto.revtrak.net/tek9.asp and choose the Teachers' Holiday Gift Fund button. Select your child's grade and fill out his/her name and your desired contribution. Any amount is welcome. IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE CHILD, PLEASE MAKE A SEPARATE ENTRY FOR EACH CHILD AND SPLIT YOUR TOTAL DESIRED CONTRIBUTION AMOUNT AMONG THEM. All teachers/staff members will receive a portion of the Teachers' Holiday gift fund from each family who contributes. The teachers will be notified that a gift has been given from your child in their honor. Gifts will be presented right before winter break.
Don't wait.......the deadline to contribute is Wednesday, November 30th at 9:00 PM. If you have any questions, please contact Debbie Keller at debikeller@comcast.net or Kristin Fine at k2fine@comcast.net.
