What's new with Watkins Middle?
A weekly reflection and preview of all things WMS
Warrior Reminders
- All students attended class meetings this week. School administration reiterated school expectations in regards to social media usage, hallway behavior, dress code, incentive events, and some new building information. Please reiterate to your child the importance of safe and responsible social media use. The use of threatening or harassing comments seems to be a reoccurring issue that many students struggle with each and every year. We appreciate your partnership in supporting your student.
- Students just completed Math and Reading MAP testing. These benchmarking assessments are used as a growth measurement tool. Students will MAP test in January as a midpoint check, and finally during May to measure their growth and teacher effectiveness throughout the school year.
- We are still working through a long list of student course change request. Please understand that your son or daughter will be met with, but we cannot guarantee that a course change is always feasible based upon class availability.
Sick students
- We have had a higher than normal number of students come to school sick. Please keep your student home if they have a temperature, diarrhea, and or any vomiting. They should not attend school until they are symptom free for a 24 hour period.
- If your student tests positive for COVID-19 please fill out the form on the district webpage. They should remain home for a five day period. They may return to school after being symptom free for 24 hours. The CDC recommends positive cases wear masks for a ten day period.
Advanced Art
Students in Advanced Art took a trip to the new pollinator garden in what will be the food forest to work on their drawing skills.
New experiences
Mrs. Diehm was kind enough to bring back some 90s nostalgia by providing some students with hackie sacks to improve their footwork after lunch.
Humanities spotlight
Students doubled up on their executive functioning and historical skills in Humanities classes as they began organizing their interactive notebooks in class.
Jigsaw in Mrs. Russell's class
Students in Mrs. Russell's sixth grade Humanities classes work collaboratively to identify the other parts of their story. The newly formed teams then had to use metaphors to describe their TEAM banners.
Mrs. Heath's treats
Students in Mrs. Heath's 7th grade Language Arts class read Fish Cheeks by Amy Tan. They were able to present stories about their family traditions and why they are important.
Treats continued
Several students cooked treats for the class to demonstrate some of their own family traditions. Students brought in no-bake cookies, cupcakes, and backyard syrup just to name a few.
