Oilers Online- How to be Successful with Virtual Learning
We want our Oilers Online to be successful with their virtual world of learning. Here are some ideas to help:
- Make an environment that is conducive to learning. Have a spot in your home that can take the place of their own classroom. Have any TV's and other electronics off during the day when it is learning/school time. Be mindful that other people are included on the videos and that there are no extra conversations or people in the background that will disrupt the online learning for all the children in your child's online class.
- Come to Morning Opening everyday (usually between 8:35-9:00)! Have your child log into their google account and go to Google Meet from their "waffle". Enter the passcode to get into their teacher's Morning Meeting. You may want to check their schedule as to their exact time. This is a great time for Online children to still have connections with other children.
- Check in with your teacher's Google Classroom everyday. They are sharing if they are doing synchronous lessons (LIVE) and asynchronous (TAPED) lessons each day. Most schedules are posted within a google slide and you can easily see what the schedule looks like Monday-Friday for that particular classroom.
- The more active you can be with the classroom and what is happening~ the more connected your child will be to school. Encourage them to take part in the synchronous learning each day by helping them check the time and their tasks at hand.
- Attendance is required. Teachers are entering attendance into Powerschool. Your child must be in attendance at either live sessions or complete the assignments for that day in order to "be in attendance". You cannot just have your child get on and then log back out right away. That does not count toward attendance. They must stay on for the main length of the lesson. If you are watching the video at another time, the assignment is part of the required attendance (just as if they were at school doing the assignment or task while in the classroom). Teachers are also scheduling individual sessions or small groups session to do assessments or instruction. It is important that you attend on the day/time the teacher sets aside for your child. This is where they also get more individual support (just as if they were in the classroom). Your online instruction is taking the place of face to face instruction. Put a schedule up or make reminder alarms in your phone so you know when to have your child join their "live" sessions each day.

BEST- Chart
B- Be Respectful
E-show Effort
S- Safety first
T- Take Responsibility
Staff and students will be clipping for each other when they recognize these attributes and model behaviors being done. We will start this the week of October 5th. This means that how we communicate with you in your child's agenda may look different. Through Agendas, Seesaw or Remind, we will be sharing a collection of efforts on how the class perceives they did as a "community" that day. They may be sharing that they did really well as a collective whole on Safety. Or, maybe they all worked well that day and had many examples of Being Respectful! We will also be weaving in key characteristics from the Circle of Courage: Generosity, Mastery, Belonging, and Independence. We are excited about our new circle of BEST implementation.
Face to Face and Online Learning Platforms
Classroom teachers are also incorporating Google Classroom instruction in with all students and not just our Oilers Online. This will help support students that may all need to use Google Classroom at any point. Check out your teachers Google Classroom even if your child is Face to Face right now. If your child misses a day for any reason, you can catch up on lessons and assignments by just logging in to the Google Classroom to see what was taught for that day.
Below are some pictures of our students following safety protocols, Virtual learning at Vowles, and technology use in the classrooms.
