Member Spotlight: Chris Delmolino
Meet Chris Delmolino! She has been a garden ministry member for 5 years and is a garden ministry board member. Chris and her husband, Micheal, have been married for 48 1/2 years. In addition, she has been a parishioner at St. Micheal's for 30+ years and is involved in pro-life, funeral, and Gabriel ministries. Chris is also a lector, lead Eucharistic minister, and the ticket coordinator for Magnificat. She enjoys being out in nature and watching the garden grow and flourish. "It is truly amazing how 40+ eggplants can come from one tiny seed!"
Of all the ministries she is involved in, garden ministry is one of her favorites! :) Chris assists with watering, weeding, harvesting, and general garden knowledge. Thanks Chris for all of your hard work.
Chris's Asparagus Tips
- Refrain from cutting new growth (fern like growth). The new growth needs to continue to grow to about 6 feet tall. It will be cut middle of January.
- If weeding, don't use a claw tool. Roots can expand as far as 2 feet underground from the main plant.
- If you are weeding and see an exposed root, cover with dirt. We do not want to leave the roots exposed.
- We had a good asparagus crop this year and hope to have a bountiful harvest next year too!
F.A.Q.
Can non-church members come out and participate in the garden?
Yes. Bring your friends, family, neighbors, etc. Don't be afraid to "plant a seed" with your non-Catholic friends and watch it blossom when they enjoy the garden as much as we do. Invite them to Mass too!
If I am working in the garden and asked if someone can have a few vegetables, can they?
In keeping with our Christian faith, yes. Use the opportunity to invite them to Mass, other parish activities, or a Saturday workday. (You can pick a few items for the person. Please refrain from inviting non-members to pick produce.)
Do we give tours?
Yes! You are welcome to lead a tour of your own at any time OR if you or someone you know would like to schedule a tour, contact Weldon Norman at 817-360-1035.
How is produce given out?
Garden ministry members are encouraged to take vegetables home for their families on Saturday or other harvest days. Harvested produce is set out for St. Michael's parishioners after all masses on a rotation/ as needed basis. For example: one weekend's produce will be set out for the 9 a.m. Mass and the following weekend, produce will be set out for the 11 a.m. Mass, etc. Also, during peak harvest season we set produce out once a week for daily Mass.
