Anderson's 3rd Grade Class
Newsletter: February 16, 2016
Math Workshop:
For the past two weeks, we have been working on identifying fractions within a set. Students have practiced by using hands-on manipulatives, pictures, and even classmates to create fractions with various numerators and denominators. There will be a fraction unit test on Wednesday, Feb. 17th. For homework, students received a brief fraction review practice sheet to help them prepare for their test.
Reading Workshop:
This week, students will practice a close reading activity about the life of Cesar Chavez. Close reading is a thoughtful process which helps students to analyze a text and develop a deep understanding of the text's form, craft and meaning. During this close reading activity, students will read an informational text about Cesar Chavez and practice citing evidence from the reading passage to explicitly answer various questions about the text. They will also have the opportunity to look for key ideas, themes, and the author's purpose of the text. Cesar Chavez is also one of our American Hero's that we will study later on in social studies. So, this will be a great preview for the students.
Writing Workshop:
Over the past two weeks, students have been working on their unguided narrative stories about their "best moment". This week, students will revise and edit their stories with a partner. Then, they will need to write their final draft for a grade. Students will be graded in the areas of ideas, style, organization and convention.
Grammar:
Here are some examples:
I will be late to the party, for I am working until seven.
I wanted to ride my bike, but the tire was flat.

Students are also encouraged to use their notes from class, their science textbook and any online resources to also help them study for Friday's test.
