The Cotton Gin

The cotton gin is a device for removing the seeds from cotton fiber. This single device could produce up to fifty pounds of cleaned cotton in a day. The cotton gin allowed much greater productivity than manual cotton separation. Prior to the introduction of the mechanical cotton gin, cotton had required considerable labor to clean and separate the cotton. As a result of the cotton gin being such a good hit the region became even more dependent on plantations and slavery.
