Alta Vista Homework Policy

Alta Vista Elementary is a "limited" homework campus. This means that teachers will not be sending homework for students to be completed and returned for a grade. We want families to focus on READING EVERY NIGHT. This practice is more effective and builds stronger foundations than any homework that might be sent home. In addition, we want students to have time after school to pursue extracurricular activities, and want families to have time to eat dinner together!

If you would like additional practice to do with your student, feel free to contact your student's teachers. We do recommend sight word practice and math fact practice when you have time.

Monthly Reading Challenge

Look out for monthly reading challenge every month. Students can complete the monthly challenge to earn a FREE BOOK!

BEAR Project

Alta Vista Elementary is excited to partner with Baylor University's BEAR Project. Our staff member will be supporting the social-emotional well being of students through small group and one on one social skills lessons, building partnerships between the community, families, and school, and supporting teachers with positive behavior strategies. If you have a student who could benefit from small group or one-on-one counseling, please reach out to Ms. Sarah Padilla by calling 662-3050.

NEW Family Support Specialist Joins Alta Vista Elementary

Hello, Alta Vista Families!

My name is Elizabeth Ligawa, and I am excited to be in this brand new role that is specifically designed to support you- the families of Alta Vista Elementary. My title is Family Support Specialist, and part of my role is to be a connection point for families to the school. Waco ISD families were recently asked to identify what they wanted to see more of in schools. Many of those families stated that it would be helpful to have a point person at the school for things that impact the household and other areas of family life. This could look like connecting to resources for utilities; helping your child get to school; finding family support due to a loss; helping your child at home; resources for groceries; finding transportation; finding ways to be involved or volunteer; etc.

I would love to be that connection point for you and your family. Please come by and say hello, and let's set up a time to visit. You can reach me at (254) 662-3050 at ext. 211. Families are the foundation of our community, and I look forwarding to supporting you this year.
