The Rideau Report

February 2022

Already February!

Bonjour les Rhinos!

For the past week and a half, we have been in the tight grip of a cold front that made it really cold outside. Some days, we even had to stay in for recess! Thankfully most children are dressed for the Canadian weather and as soon as the temperature allows it, we go outside to play. At school, we have plenty of extra hats, extra snow pants and extra coats, but we are short on mittens. Don't hesitate to send a second pair with your child as mittens often get wet or one mysteriously disappears...

On the COVID front, you will be happy to hear that our absence rates are very similar to what we had in September and October. We continue with hand sanitizing, wearing masks, staying in cohorts and going home when feeling sick. We are very thankful to our emergency staff who can come in when the board occasional staff list gets exhausted. I would also like to thank our yard supervisors who are doing an amazing job on yards. It is not easy to keep an eye on so many students running around.

With February comes second term; this means teachers are busy writing Term 1 report cards and February 2, Wednesday, is a PA Day. Report cards will go home on February 18.

Grade 6 "graduation" pictures will be on February 10.

For Valentine's Day, we will continue talking about our recurring theme of kindness. We will have a display in the main hallway that asks the question "Qu'est-ce que c'est l'amitié?" (What is friendship?). Students and staff will be invited to fill out hearts with examples of what friendship is.

Family Day February 21 and there is no school on that day.

Please find attached below a letter from the Health Unit regarding immunization of children (regular immunization, not COVID).

Finally, we are putting a yearbook together, even though we don't have sports or clubs. The students are doing amazing things in class and we try to take many pictures so we can have a great overview of their life at school. We think their achievement is worth celebrating in print. Yearbooks are available to purchase on line for $20 at and the yearbook ID code is 13186822.

Donations of clothes, toys, books, sports equipment, and small household items are welcome. Stay tuned for details in the coming months.

Parent Council -> Our next meeting is on February 8, at 6:30. It will be a virtual meeting.

I also want to mention how fantastic this school community is. It is always a pleasure to talk with your children, to read with them and to watch them grow. I feel very fortunate to work at Rideau.

These are all the news I have at this time. I wish you all a great month of February. I wonder what the groundhog will see...
