During the short week of 10/7 we communicated with families sending home 158 messages which was only 2 less the previous full week. We shared 30 pictures and videos about half of the previous full week. However, positive student feedback climbed to 86%. getting closer to our goal of 90% positive feedback school wide. Please add Principal Kemp, Dean Amos, Dean Moultrie and Coach Turner as co-teachers if you have not done so already. Please reach out to any parents that have not connected with your ClassDojo. Contact Ms. Woods if you need additional support.
World Day of Bullying Prevention was a success and our students enjoyed the show. Shout out to our event planner extraordinaire Coach Turner and everyone else that pitched in. We also appreciate our sister schools Carver and Price for pitching in to make bullying history. Thank you for all of your efforts we gave bullying the blues and worked to make it history! While this event highlighted our efforts, we must work each and every day to eradicate bullying from our beloved Slater Elementary!

This Week:
- Entry Events should take place during the weeks of 10/21 and 10/28
Next Steps
- Strong Launch to Quarter 2's Project
- Our next tentative fire drill date has been updated to October 24th
- Immediately intervene anytime you see students in conflict. Remember it only takes a moment for a spark to turn into a fire. Students under your supervision should be monitored closely.
- Mr. Moultrie would love and come to read to your class. Please email him to coordinate a time that is ideal.
- We had three incidents on the playground last week. The playground can be a fun place. It’s also a place where a lot can go wrong really fast. Avoid distractions while monitoring students students. Have a discussion and devise a plan to divide of the playground and other areas of play like the massive grassy field. Then decide who is going to monitor what area. Disperse to your designated area. Spreading out helps ensure maximum supervision. Monitor student interactions closely. Remember it only takes a second for a spark to turn into a flame. As an aside, your time on the playground is a great time to recharge with some mindful breathing or sharpen your attentional stability. Attentional Stability is a skill and allows us to manage certain situations more efficiently.
If anyone needs further information on the new lockdown nomenclature or lockdown protocols or expectations, please reach out to Mr. Moultrie by email. Please review the expectations for each of the three types of lockdown Level I: Exterior, Level II Interior and Level III:Full Lockdown.
Students are striving for Caught Being Kind tickets just like this young lady! Keep providing cards to students you caught being kind!
Extra tickets are in the office. You can also use the attached document to print your own.
Culture Resource of the Week
This week’s feature article is MINDFULNESS: The Value of Silence in Schools . Intentional silence in the school day offers opportunities for deep reflection and learning. By Dana Weeks. The author outlines some of the benefits of Intentional Silence. “Silence offers a structure that encourages internal discipline, and as a result, greater capacity for free thinking. It is an essential element of a pedagogical practice that supports ideas of continual growth, possibility, and fundamental care of students.” If we implemented this with fidelity, imagine how much more prepared our students would be for the long intentionally silent moments our formative and summative assessments often bring, especially the Georgia Milestones Assessment. Practice intentional silence with your class. Time your students. Establish time goals, records and top times. Never use real flame candles in your classrooms but check out this video of an exercise in intentional silence exercise where you could use a battery powered tea light or candle or any object.

Instructional Resource of the Week
What: Looking for tasks aligned to the standards you are teaching? Look no further, Illustrative Mathematics provides teachers with a variety of tasks aligned to the current math standards. The tasks address more than one standard. What a great way for students to practice multiple skills at one time! In addition to the task and resources needed, there is a detailed rationale for each task and suggestions on how to differentiate to meet the needs of students working on different levels. These tasks would be great addition to your collaborative small group assignments for your students.
