#Week7
Homeroom: Students continue to bring in their very special talking pieces for our weekly circle discussions. This week we focused on how one person or one comment can change someones mood, even their day. The students wrote positive comments on sticky notes and put one in every classroom teachers mailbox. The response was very positive.
Social Studies: This week the students were exposed to an overview of the Maya, Aztec and Inca empires based on information from our textbook and brought to life by excerpts from The History Channel series, “Engineering an Empire” with dramatic reenactments and amazing computer graphics.
Science: Students worked on developing a hypothesis and identifying controlled variables, independent variables and dependent variables. We continued experimenting with our catapults and projectiles. The challenge was to see how far and how high each team could launch the projectile.
Projects are due on Monday. Each student will have an opportunity to present their project to the class. A few have already made it to the classroom and it looks like they had fun and did a great job. Thank you for your support of the project.
Math 5: Unit 2 emphasizes estimation, addition, subtraction and multiplication of whole numbers and decimals. We also have been practicing expanded notation with whole numbers and decimals.
Math 6: We started Unit 2- Operations with Whole Numbers and Decimals. The students are practicing reading and writing large numbers and small numbers including decimals. The students now have an understanding of standard notation, expanded notation and number-word notation.
For extra practice you can ask your child to write the following numbers in expanded notation: 275,298 and 45.921. Next week we will be adding, subtracting and multiplying decimals.
Language arts: In reading , we continue to work on analyzing characters for fiction, and organizing ideas for non-fiction. In writing, we are finishing our work off a story prompt and working on thought shots and describing physical character traits through action.
