Long Hill Township School District
Long Hill Highlights - November 2019
Long Hill Board of Education and Township Join Forces for the Future
In an effort to maintain open and frequent communications and collaboration with the Township Council, I have asked that representatives of the Township Council and the Board of Education continue to meet to discuss matters that are of shared concern.
By focusing on this important partnership, we can strive for a better future for the citizens of Long Hill, including how our respective groups can work together to provide residents the best and most economical use of the town's resources.
As Board members, we would like to wish our school community a successful school year and hope to see you very soon at one of our many district events.
Mrs. Marta Moakley
President, Long Hill Township Board of Education
From Superintendent Acevedo
Dear Long Hill Township Community,
Happy Autumn! With autumn comes the reporting of our New Jersey standardized test results. Our students have once again demonstrated high marks in the areas of literacy and mathematics and we are thankful to all of our students, teachers, administrators and parents for their hard work and continued support. We are especially pleased with the performance of our students in Grade 8 general math in which the students exceeded the state average three fold! Also, 99% of our 8th grade students met or exceeded expectations in English Language Arts, while 100% of our Algebra 1 and Geometry students met or exceeded expectations. Please click on this link to view the presentation which was made to the Board of Education on October 28, 2019.
This year, the district will need the input of parents, teachers, alumni students, administrators and community members to develop a new five year strategic plan. This plan will become the road map for the district. We will be inviting all to attend this important event to brainstorm and develop an exemplary learning plan for our students. We expect to have the plan completed by the end of this school year and to be implemented in September of 2020. More information will be forthcoming.
Lastly, we encourage our community to follow us on Twitter! Each of our schools is now on twitter. Please consider following us: @LHTSD, @LonghillSuper, @lh_CentralMS, @LH_Gillette, and @LH_Millington. If you are not on Twitter, you can still view the great things happening in our district on our Twitter feed posted on the district website.
Best regards,
Dr. Acevedo
Central School Starts the Year with Saying Hello
Central Middle School students started the 2019-2020 school year welcoming one another with a kind smile and a hello. The district’s continuation of Choose Love’s Social and Emotional Learning enrichment curriculum focuses on character education activities, philanthropic initiatives, classroom lessons, and school wide assemblies. At Central Middle School, Mrs. Romaniuk is working with teachers and building staff to create and implement social and emotional learning lessons in each classroom. Students began the 2019-20 school year with the theme of “It Starts with Hello,” a lesson aimed to motivate all students to be kind to one another while focusing on learning and practicing everyday conversation skills. This allowed for an open dialogue and communication amongst students in the classroom, as each lesson is structured for students to have a safe place to talk about topics relating to social and emotional well-being. Central is excited to continue the Choose Love Social and Emotional Learning Curriculum, as well as implement new and fun character education initiatives. We are looking forward to a successful 2019- 2020 school year!

Future Ready Schools Update
Our district submitted the many requirements for Future Ready Bronze certification in the Spring of 2019. We were informed recently that we still had work to do in various areas to attain Bronze certification. The district’s Future Ready Committee consisting of teachers, administrators, and the Coordinator of Technology Services has already met to review the feedback and to develop a plan of action moving forward. However, the Future Ready Schools program is now being revamped by the New Jersey Department of Education and we are expecting different guidelines by the end of November. We are anxiously awaiting the new requirements so our committee can get back to work! Information about Future Ready New Jersey can be found here.
Gillette's Pumpkin Patch
Every Fall students in Ms. Bauer's Kindergarten class learn about the life cycle of the pumpkin. Then as a fun follow up activity, the students bring in pumpkins and decorate them in art class. The pumpkins are "hidden" by volunteer parents on the playground (aka our "pumpkin patch") and the students then search and find their pumpkins.
Increasing Phonological Awareness
Students in Ms. Nusser's 1st grade classroom work collaboratively to unscramble phonemes and increase their phonological awareness. Phonemes are the smallest mental units of sounds that help to differentiate units of meaning and are instrumental in literacy and language production.
Creating Tabletop games at Millington
Fifth grade STEAM students created their own tabletop games with littleBits circuits and arts n' crafts materials.
