Summer School...
You may have heard that the traditional OPS summer school program will not take place this year due to COVID-19 guidelines. In lieu of the traditional summer school program OPS will offer a Remote Learning Summer School program for 2,000 elementary students entering grades first through sixth in elementary schools in the fall from June 15 – July 14, 2020.
There will be no school on July 3 or July 6.
This remote learning summer school will meet Monday-Friday from 8:30am – 12:00pm and is designed for students who our research department believes will benefit from the reading, math and writing activities that will take place daily with a teacher. A member of the Skinner Magnet Center Instructional Leadership Team will be calling families of our students that were selected for the smaller summer program before the end of the day on Wednesday, May 13th.
Scholastic Summer Reading Books & additional materials...
We are happy to announce that all elementary students will receive a set of books to use for leisure reading over the summer. PK-3rd grade students will receive ten books and 4th-6th grade students will receive a set of five fiction or nonfiction novels.
Accompanying the books will be a letter from Dr. Logan challenging our OPS students to reach a goal of reading 2,000,000 minutes read over the summer. blew the 1,000,000 minute challenge out of the water so we are raising the stakes because we know our students can meet the goal!
We are encouraging our students to read for at least 30 minutes each day over the summer and then log their minutes on the OPS website at https://district.ops.org/ABOUTOPS/SummerReading.aspx#103181328-current-progress.
Students and families can begin logging minutes right away. Minutes are tallied by the district, school and grade level so be sure to encourage students to help their school and grade reach the top of the leader board!
