Whiteley Wildcat Update
November 12, 2019
PTA
We had a wonderful bingo night, thanks to our PTA! We still have some Yankee candle orders that need to be picked up. They will be in your child’s classroom for parents to pick-up during conferences. Some items are noted as delayed on the packing slips. Once these are available they will be shipped to the school and a communication will be sent. Thank you for all your support! We raised $3153.70 for the PTA with your help!
Holiday Shoppe:
The Holiday Shoppe is back and will be open for students to shop from 12/10-12/12. More details will be sent home soon so please watch those backpacks!
5 Essentials Survey
Each year Illinois public schools participate in a 5 Essentials survey. We are asking our parent community to please take a moment to complete this survey. The survey is directly connected to our school report card and informs the school and the community how Whiteley functions in specific key areas. As a parent your participation is greatly appreciated. Students in grades 4-6 will also take part in this survey. I have attached letters with more information in regards to the 5 Essentials.
D15’s Inquiry-based Social Studies Curriculum Engages Students
District 15 is approaching teaching history through a lens of civic responsibility, cultural awareness and inquiry. Learning about history not only builds literacy skills, but it also allows students to think deeply about themselves, how to learn from the experiences of others, and how to have an impact on their communities. Students are engaged through inquiry-based learning and interactive experiences that encourage them to become a part of the history they are studying.
All D15’s social studies programs incorporate rigorous literacy standards, as well as provide resources for teachers to differentiate for students who need enrichment and/or remediation.
At the elementary level, D15 introduced the TCI History Alive program for grades K-6 students beginning with the 2018-19 school year. Each grade level has an overarching theme: K - Me & My World; 1st - My School & Family; 2nd - My Community; 3rd - Our Community & Beyond; 4th - Regions of Our Country; 5th - America's Past; and 6th - History/The Ancient World.
The lessons invite students to engage and interact with the content. For example, a fifth-grade lesson includes a group activity where students are asked to identify physical features of the Indian subcontinent and explain how geography influenced the location of early settlement in India.
D15 also continues to support our teachers as these new curriculum materials are introduced, through in-person professional development opportunities and ongoing curricular support.

District 15’s Inclement Weather Protocols
As we enter the winter season, we want to remind families of District 15 families of the district’s emergency closing protocol. The school district takes the responsibility of deciding to close schools very seriously, and will only close in the event of extremely inclement weather.
If school is canceled, that decision is made by 5 a.m. You will be notified of the closure in a variety of ways:
· Phone, Text, and Email—District 15 will send a message to all parents through a voice call, text message and email. Please ensure your contact information listed in the Infinite Campus is accurate. If you have changes you'd like to make to your personal contact information, please log into the Parent Portal and adjust your contact information.
· Website—If classes are canceled due to inclement weather, an announcement will be posted on ccsd15.net and all of our school websites.
· Social Media—School closures will be posted on the district’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
· Radio and TV—Should a snow day be called, District 15 will inform television and radio stations.
