Note from the Principal
Closing Out the School Year
As we count down these last remaining days of the school year, it is time to reflect back on the year and all of the challenges and successes we have enjoyed here at Boone. It has been a very productive and active year. Through it all, the Boone families and staff have drawn closer together and have united in our belief that Boone is a wonderful school, an exciting place to be, and a safe place for our children. There have been so many new and exciting things that have taken place, it would take me a year just to list everything.
I hope all of you have a relaxing and enjoyable time away from school over the next weeks. We have all earned a bit of relaxation time. As much as I hate to see this year end, I am already getting excited for the year ahead. It has truly been a great year!!!!

Summer Screen Time . . .
Our children’s connection to media is everywhere, coming from more sources and more screens than we probably remember when we were kids: TV, movies, video games, handheld games, computers, cell phones, I-pads, I-pods, watches, etc.
There are many wonderful uses for media that provide conveniences and education for us and our families. There are also dangers in media use that as parents and educators, we are tasked to protect our children from.
With all the amazing advances in technology, we cannot forget to make advances in how we protect our children from media that is not age-appropriate. It’s important to remember that children’s brains are not fully developed, specifically the part of the brain (pre-frontal cortex) responsible for critical thinking, judgement, problem-solving, and impulse control.
When a child or adolescent views media showing violence, sexual content, or harmful stereotypes, their own ideas, feelings, and behaviors are impacted. Without some guidance from a trusted grown-up, repeated exposure to these kinds of media may lead to an increase in aggression and a decrease in empathy.

Library Lines
It has been such a wonderful year of reading and learning in the library. When we come back in the Fall our library will have a brand new face!! Thank you to all of you who helped make this happen.
It is so important that students continue to read over the summer. Here are some important videos that show what happens when students don’t read over the summer.
About the 5 Book Dive
The 5 Book Dive is an Austin ISD summer reading program created in 2016 by Superintendent Dr. Paul Cruz. The purpose of the program is to encourage all students to read at least five self-selected books over the summer. Summer is a great time for students to relax with a book (or magazine, or comic, or whatever) and experience the pleasure of reading just for fun! And research has shown that reading just five books can protect students from a drop in reading levels known as the "summer slide", which disproportionately affects lower-income students (Alexander, Entwisle, & Olson, 2007; Kim, 2004).
All students who participate in the 5 Book Dive, and turn in their bookmark to Ms. Lightbourn in the fall, will be recognized at an assembly during the Fall of 2018. I have provided the link to the 5 Book Dive website and to the Bookmark that students will use to keep track of their reading. If you lose it, not to worry. Visit the Boone Library Website or the 5 Book Dive website and print another one.
Here’s a link to the bookmark. The packet with this information is coming home today, Thursday, May 24 in your child’s folder.
