Lion's Pride

October 2018

Message from the Superintendent

The month of September was a busy one for Jessieville Schools. Students and staff are settled into their school routines, athletics are going strong with volleyball, football, cross-country, tennis, and golf all competing, students participated in showing animals for the Garland County Fair, and all of the events that go along with conducting school. Information about some of the events from September are included in the articles and photos below.

The month of October promises to be a busy one as well. Please make sure to view the Upcoming Events section of this newsletter for dates and activities. More information can be found on the district website and calendar.

I am thankful for the way that the Jessieville parents and community support our district, staff, and students. Your dedication to us is one of the things that makes this a great place to be.

Jessieville Voted #1 School

Jessieville School District was voted #1 School in the Hot Springs Village Voice Readers' Choice awards for 2018. Our neighboring school district of Fountain Lake came in second. It is wonderful to be celebrated for what we already know to be true. Lions are #1! Thank you to all who voted for the Jessieville School District.

After-school Programs

On September 10, the after-school programs started in all Jessieville Schools. The goals of the 21st CCLC after-school programs is to help students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; to offer students a broad array of enrichment activities to complement their regular academic programs; and to offer literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.

Jessieville Elementary has 105 students enrolled and 15 staff members working the program. Jessieville Middle and High Schools have a total of 71 students enrolled and 20 staff members working.

Each program offers homework help and academic enrichment from 3:30 - 4:30 in all core areas. AP students have their teachers available for help during after school hours.

After the homework and academic enrichment time, JES offers classes that include dance (by a certified dance instructor), Monkeynastix, Muscles and Manners (an all boy class who are creating and building things around campus), and an AR Game and Fish presentation every Thursday. The presentations included: snakes of Arkansas, animal adaptations, birds of prey, and alligators!

Based on the survey last year, middle and high school students were interested in sports and physical activity time, so the JMS/JHS program offers tennis, basketball, croquet, and yoga this session. Arts and crafts classes (such as making bracelets and pillows), technology with Wii games, Makerspace, computer time, and open library hours are also being offered.

For the middle and high school students during the Spring semester, concurrent college courses through NPC will be offered on campus to our students and staff (and hopefully parents) free of charge. Hunters Education is being offered this fall and boaters education in the spring.

Annual Report to the Public

Meet Our School Resource Officer

Jessieville School District has a new School Resource Officer for the 2018-2019 school year. Garland County Deputy Mark Kizer was hired in July to work with students and staff on the Jessieville School campus.

Deputy Kizer served in the Navy and Marines after graduating from Fountain Lake High School, worked in law enforcement and the behavioral health field in Arizona, and has worked for the Garland County Sheriff's Office since 2009.

Deputy Kizer has an extensive background in law enforcement and hold many certifications. He has been a great addition to Jessieville and is forming bonds with students, staff, and the community as he serves our district.

Take Your Legislator to School

Jessieville had the pleasure of hosting a breakfast and a Q&A session with State Senators Alan Clark and Bill Sample and Representatives Marcus Richmond and Mickey Gates for "Take your Legislator to School Month". Jessieville seniors had the privilege of asking questions related to what they are learning in their Civics class. It was a great educational opportunity, and we appreciate our legislators taking the time to speak with our students.
