D103's Commitment to Racial Justice and Equity for All
District 103 Family,
The tragic death of George Floyd in Minnesota has brought racial injustice and violence to the forefront of our communities once again. The magnitude of the protests we see broadcast every day is a statement to the level of passion that people have looking for change in our nation. Sadness, outrage, and pain are just some of the emotions that this incident has brought to the surface in many people’s lives.
Our district is committed to ensuring racial justice and promoting equity for all of our children, families, and community. Our Social Emotional curriculum focuses on treating others with kindness, caring, and empathy and is the bedrock for how we teach our children. Our teachers and staff instill these values through our lessons and day to day interactions. I am proud of our students who continuously work to support each other and call out injustice when they see it. I truly believe our next generation of leaders (your children) will live in a better world because of their commitment to equity and care for others.
Discussing these topics with our children can be very difficult. An article from Today.com provides suggestions about how to talk to your children about racism, protests and injustice. To broaden the discussion, National Geographic has published an article about how to raise an antiracist child.
D103 cares about the mental health and wellness of our students. If your child needs support during this time due to these current circumstances, please contact Director of Student Services, Gina Finaldi, who will connect you with appropriate support. Dr. Finaldi may be reached at gfinaldi@d103.org.
Thank you all for your support and commitment to raise all of our D103 students to be Leaders in Learning.
Sincerely,
Scott Warren, Ed.D
Superintendent of D103 Schools
