Keeping the Hockinson community in the loop!

Elementary students return for 5 days per week of in-person learning

610 students at Hockinson Heights Elementary School have completed their first 5-day week of in-person learning, and are thrilled to once again have the opportunity to see their full class face-to-face and socialize during recess and lunch. In order to maintain an environment that is both safe and fun for the kids, every class has an assigned recess zone with a set activity that students are rotated through each day. In the classroom, students have been working hard on academic learning through activities such as whole-class discussions, writing projects, and hands-on math exercises.

HHES Recycled Inventions

In celebration of Earth Day, 4th and 5th grade students at HHES were tasked with repurposing/upcycling trash-bound materials from around their homes into creative inventions and beautiful art projects. Some of the products designed by students included a wind chime made out of a stick, string, and keys; a sun catcher made out of a water bottle, stick, and twine; and a decimal and fraction sorter made with recycled boxes (pictured). Although the assignment was completed at home due to hybrid learning, students were able to present their creations to the class with plenty of opportunity for questions from classmates. Afterwards, students also completed a reflection sheet and were encouraged to discuss the importance of reducing the amount of trash thrown away.

Kindergarten and new student registration is open

Now is the time to register students for kindergarten if you haven't already! Since enrollment largely determines funding for our schools, it's very helpful for us to know how many students we can expect to welcome next school year as early as possible. For instructions on new student enrollment, visit our website.

New this year, Hockinson is offering a state-funded Transitional Kindergarten program for 4 year olds in our community. Visit our website for more information on this new program and how to enroll.

Note: For those students who will turn 6 years old before August 31, 2021, but were not enrolled in kindergarten this year, we recommend that these students enroll in kindergarten, not first grade for the 2021-22 school year. The Skyward student enrollment system will automatically register your 6-year-old in first grade, so you will need to reach out to HHES to place your student in kindergarten. Contact HHES at (360) 448-6430.

Student information updates required

All families will need to update student information online this year through Family Access/Skyward. Due to new state reporting requirements, all students must have their ethnicity/race information verified in the student information system.

Log in to Family Access from your school website's homepage, click "Student Information Updating" on the left side of the page, and update your student's information. Click on the image next to this article for an example of what this screen will look like when you are logged in.
