Your Weekly Update from Johnson Elementary School
Principal's Message
Dear Johnson Families,
We are approaching mid-December and are several lessons into “Self-Management,” the second of five units of study in the Everyday Speech curriculum.
Self-Management is the process we use to regulate and cope with our emotions as well as motivate ourselves and perform throughout the day. It is also the tool we use to set and achieve personal and educational goals.
Our students at different grades have been learning about:
- Monitor and regulate emotions
- Use awareness of emotions to guide decision‐making
- Motivate oneself
- Cope with stress and anxiety
- Exercise self-control and delay gratification
- Establish and work toward realistic short and long-term goals
Some tips for families at home:
- Discuss what types of things are within or outside of your student’s control.
- Encourage realistic goal-setting and talk about how your student can take small steps to reach a goal.
- Talk about goals in different areas of our lives; from friendships, academics, to hobbies, there are many ways we can work towards improving ourselves.
- Celebrate success and small wins for your student, from something as small as helping to clean-up after completing a project, or giving up screen time in exchange for family time.
- Encourage your student to talk about the different emotions they experience throughout the day.
- Model talking about your own feelings and how they’ve changed over the course of the day.
- I want to acknowledge and thank our teachers, students, and staff for their efforts devoted to the successful implementation of this new social emotional learning curriculum “Everyday Speech.”. We are all working on becoming more skilled at stating our feelings and pairing the words with coping and resilience strategies.
Best regards,
John
