A Message from the Media Center
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Digital Citizenship is an important aspect to our one-to-one initiative at Autrey Mill Middle School. With the ever increasing exposure to online opportunities, discussions with our students and children regarding online safety and cyberbullying continues to be an integral part of our technology plan. If you were not able to attend our technology workshop on October 30th, one of our curriculum nights, or are new to Autrey Mill, we encourage you to look over our digital citizenship presentation.
This can be located at our Autrey Mill Middle School homepage or through this link:
Thank you for your continued involvement!

Academic Information
Math:
6On Math:
We are working on out expressions unit. We have a quiz on Tuesday, 12/4, which will cover order of operations, evaluating expressions, and exponents (EE.2c). Next, we will work on properties (EE.3), parts of an expression (EE.2b), combining like terms (EE.4), and factoring out from distributive property (NS.4). Please see finals schedule to see when your student will be testing on this material.
6A Math :
We are working on solving 2-step equations with rational numbers including the distributive property and word problems (7.EE.4). Our quiz will be Thursday or Friday 12/6 or 12/7. Next, we will be solving and graphing inequalities (7.EE.4). Please see finals schedule to see when your student will be testing on this material.
7A:
We are finishing Part 2 of Unit 2, Expressions and Equations. The last part of this unit focuses on solving and graphing inequalities. We will be solving 1 and 2 step inequalities with decimals, fractions, and by using the distributive property. Our Unit 2 Part 2 test will be the midterm exam during the week of December 17th.
Reading:
Reading is starting our second “Bend” within our larger unit, Tapping the Power of Nonfiction. This Bend, Investigating Topics with Research Groups, and Synthesizing across Tests on That Topic, is about teaching students how to read to learn. Students will be equipped with the tried-and-true skills they need to approach a topic they’re fascinated by, even if it’s a topic they know very little about, and to learn all they can about that topic through reading. Students will leave this bend with a toolkit of strategies that help them build background knowledge, synthesize what they learn across texts, and make strategic decisions about when they need to do a bit of on-the-run research to shore up their understanding of a text.

Social Studies:
We have begun our unit on Canada. This unit is much shorter than the first 3 units on Europe and will conclude prior to winter break. This first week we have learned about Canada’s geography and environment. Next week, we will take some time to review economic and government terms and then look at how they apply to Canada. Then we will get into Canada’s history to round out the unit.
The week of Dec. 10th, students will be working on a group project. They will have a choice of two projects. The first project asks students to demonstrate their knowledge of Canada by writing a children’s book with a central character who is travelling around Canada for some reason (plot to be determined by students). The second project asks students to show their knowledge of Canada by connecting everything back to one environmental issue –where it is, its economic reasons and/or impact, how the government is involved, any historical attachments, and any potential solutions. Students and their groups will be given time to work on a planning page for their project and have days in class to work on the final project. This will be a quiz grade.
The final test for Canada will occur during finals week. (Dec. 17th-20th: dates vary based on SS period). Thanks so much for a great first semester! We are looking forward to studying Latin America and Australia with students next semester!
Science:
Our final unit in science this semester is the first half of our study of hydrology. This will include oceans, the water cycle, and layers of the atmosphere.
The textbook chapters that cover this unit are:
-Unit 3, sections 1-4
-Unit 4, section 1
The study guide for the unit test will be posted as homework in google classroom on Friday, December 7th and reviewed in class on Friday, December 14th. The ISN and resource pages are also wonderful study tools to help prepare for the test!
ELA:
In ELA, we are building upon our foundation from the previous unit and using the strategies we have learned to answer questions that require support details, or evidence from a provided text.
Additionally, students are looking at text structures of various non-fiction texts and will understand how recognition of text structures increases their comprehension of a text. Students will also examine how text features help them answer questions or locate information in a nonfiction text.
We will end the unit by providing students exposure to a variety of sentence structures to ultimately assist with more interesting writing that we will pursue in the 2nd semester. We will provide a study guide as usual for the final unit test of the semester.
French:
Bonjour, parents!
In 6th grade French we skipped having a unit test over numbers and colors. This week, we have dived into discussing France culture and Francophone geography. This week is focused on Euro significance, Frances’ culture (basic government, monuments, and education facts), some important cities, and France’s geography en français! Next week, we will focus more on the francophone countries around the world with a little art project at the end of the week. Tuesday December 11th will be an open note quiz over ALL of this mini-culture unit and then we’ll use the rest of the week to review for the cumulative midterm. Yes, the world language midterms are cumulative. Your students are doing really well in French! As always, please email me with anything.
