Tēnā koutou e te whānau,
This is an opportunity to reflect with gratitude on what has been achieved over this term. These include:
My Pōwhiri as the new Principal
Recognising the incredible and unique life of service of Queen Elizabeth II
The mahi that has gone into preliminary exams by staff and students
The fellowship and achievements experienced through Winter Tournament and the Winter Codes
Celebrations of the Tongan and Te Reo Māori language weeks
The appointment of a new Board
The mahi that has gone into extra curricular activities to allow students to experience and express their interests outside of the classroom
The lifting of pandemic restrictions and the mahi to reconstruct normality back into school
The mahi of Te Roopu Āwhina
As the Tumuaki I would like to thank our staff and the community for the support over this term and welcoming me into the school.
We are now into the business end of the year for Senior students. Term 4 is essentially devoted to revision, so the mahi has to be done by students over the holiday break to study and prepare themselves for the external exams.
Academic achievement is the core business of any high school, including Rosehill College. Parents are vital partners with the College in achieving the best academic results for our young adults. In my experience, I have found the following points helpful in optimising results:
Ensure your son/daughter cuts back on part-time work where possible including screen time
Help your son/daughter set up a study timetable and stick to it
Encourage your son/daughter to attend revision classes offered by teachers where possible.
Support your son/daughter with setting “stretch targets”. Don’t aim for an ‘Achieved’ when with more effort, a ‘Merit’ or ‘Excellence’ can be obtained
If you or your son/daughter are worried about academic progress, reach out to teachers or Heads of Houses who are there to help.
We must acknowledge that students will be under stress, not simply with academic pressure, but also other factors in their lives. It is important that you remain positive, affirming and encouraging when the going gets tough. I have always found young people respond much better to praise than criticism. Mostly they want a non judgemental listener who will help solve issues with them.
There is considerable wisdom in the words of Thomas Edison that genius is “one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration”. It has certainly been my experience working in schools for over 30 years that top scholars are not necessarily the naturally gifted students but those who worked the hardest with the God-given talents they were given!
When students return from after the break teachers will also be doing their mahi to prepare students for the external exams and help in any way possible.
Just a few housekeeping reminders:
Return to school on Monday 17th October 2022 in full school uniform on time. A reminder to all Year 13 students as the warmer weather sets in, please ensure your attire is appropriate for school. Any Year 13 student wearing clothing that does not align with the existing expectations will be sent home to get changed.
Vaping is becoming a huge concern for many schools and Rosehill College is no exception. The smoke free Environment and Regulation (Vaping) Amendments Act 2020 prohibits vaping in schools, kura kaupapa, kōhanga reo, early childhood education and care centres. While this is a personal choice for many and I fully understand and respect this, however, I request parents to speak to your son/daughter that vaping at school is not only illegal but also disrespectful of our core values as a College.
There will be consequences for students who are caught vaping.
Again thank you for your support.

Recap: The Grand final EPro8 Challenge
The Grand final EPro8 Challenge was held last Tuesday at AUT and as expected it was an amazing evening which was filled with excitement and so many unexpected turns. Even though most of the time we were leading on the scoreboard, we were unlucky in the last two minutes where we missed out on some crucial deciding points. However, our Rosehill College team showed great team chemistry and mana and we are extremely proud of our boys which came in 3rd place!
Please congratulate our boys Geoff Ribu, Samuel Jones, Connor Duffus and Christopher Thompson. They were an amazing team and could not have represented Rosehill College in a better way.
Again a big thank you to our amazing whānau for tonight's support and overall support during the competition.

Well, we’ve made it to the end of another term. I just want to, once more, thank all those who have been involved in our winter sports. After the last two years it has been wonderful to get a full winter season in. Congratulations to all our teams who have represented themselves, their whanau and the school with pride and distinction. I know our junior summer codes are going to continue this.
While regular season sport ended several weeks ago we were lucky enough to be able to host the first match in the annual Rosehill v Papakura rugby league match and have the U70kg rugby team host Mt Richmond Special School this week. Please see below for reports on both. Thank you to all those who came out to support all the teams involved in these special events.
The Sports Department wishes all our students a safe and restful break and we look forward to seeing you on your return in Term 4.
Nicola Bailey
Director of Sports
Rugby League
As the current holders of the Battle of the Tracks trophy Rosehill was the host for the first match of 2022.
Having won the trophy in 2020, for the first time in at least 12 years, the boys got off to a slow start with Papakura taking an early 6-0 lead.
It didn’t take long for the boys to strike back however, through a try in the corner. Unfortunately the boys were unable to convert.
Through some great attacking play and expansive passing the boys were able to head into the half-time break 12-6 up.
After half-time, a flurry of tries saw the boys increase their lead, while a couple of late ones to Papakura saw the final score 32-16 to Rosehill.
The boys have the opportunity to secure the trophy early next term, with the second game to be played at Papakura High on Wednesday 19 October, 4.00pm kick-off.
Thanks to all the supporters who came out to cheer the boys on, see you next term at Papakura.
Rugby Union
The U70kg rugby team had the opportunity to play Mount Richmond Special School. Mt Richmond is a school for students aged 5-21 with an intellectual disability and is the only special school in Auckland that has its own rugby team.
This traditionally end of season match for the U70s is always a fun, social game which showcases the abilities of the students from both sides.
Playing golden oldie scrums and coming up against some loan players (from the 1st XV), the U70s had a great time, playing some running rugby and exhibiting what the spirit of rugby is all about - having a run around with mates and having a great time.
Special thanks to the Mt Richmond boys, coach and support staff who made the trip, and to Hannah Edwards for organising the match and after match food.
We look forward to seeing Mt Richmond again next year.
Uniform
Only the sports hoodie ordered through the Sports Office is counted as a school uniform. These hoodies are designed to NOT have a name on the back, if a name is added after collection from the Sports Office they become a non-uniform item. All other hoodies & jackets, regardless of whether or not they have the school crest, are not school uniform and will be confiscated. Please do not wear these at school, they are for training and game days only.
Sports Awards
Our annual Sports Award Dinner is being held on Thursday 27 October, doors opening at 5.30pm.
This is an invite only event and students will receive or be able to purchase tickets early next term.
