Bison On Track Calendar Adjustments
All students should be working a minimum of 1 hour in Exact Path for Math and 1 hour in MindPlay for Reading per week.

Free Tutoring Through OVCA!
We are excited to announce our school’s new Tutoring Initiative! OVCA will offer personalized academic tutoring based on your child’s needs with an emphasis in the subjects of English Language Arts (Reading/Writing) and Mathematics.
At this time, our new tutoring program will be completely virtual through an online service called TutorMe. Through this program, your child will be able to access a tutor at any time of the day to work on any subject. While the emphasis will be in math and reading, tutors for all subjects are available. The tutor will work with your child’s curriculum to help them improve their grades and gain confidence. The focus of tutoring is to equip your child with different methods of learning so they can have life-long skills in how to best solve problems for assignments, homework and projects.

Math
Unit 13 Points a Coordinate Grid
You did it! You survived the marathon of decimal lessons! Give yourself a high five! This week are going to be diving into coordinate grids!
5.A.1.2 Use a rule or table to represent ordered pairs of whole numbers and graph these ordered pairs on a coordinate plane, identifying the origin and axes in relation to the coordinates.
Key Understandings
Use a table to represent ordered pairs of whole numbers.
Use a rule to represent ordered pairs of whole numbers.
Graph ordered pairs on quadrant one of a coordinate plane.
Identify the origin and axes in relation to coordinates.
Common Misconceptions
Confuse the two axes of a graph.
Think that the points on the graph stay in the same position even if the axes change.
Think that graphs always begin at the origin.
Think that the greatest numbers labeled on the axes represent the greatest values reached.
EX. If a graph of grades has the grades axis labeled up to 100 percent, the student believes the highest grade was an 100% even if was 92.
Think points on a coordinate graph are not related to an input-output table.

One of the best ways to improve your student's MAP math score it to get them familiar with the vocabulary used during testing. Quizlet is a great site to use.

Math Facts
If your student struggles with 5th Grade Math, one reason can be that they are struggling with their math facts. Encourage daily practice of Math facts to produce fluency using flash cards or interactive Math games and apps. Below are a few helpful resources:

Math Lesson Structure Review
Math lessons are designed to take 60 minutes. Please be aware that students can click through a lesson that doesn’t have a graded quiz and mark it complete without actually doing all the parts of the lesson. Please check in with your students to see that they are doing all the steps in each math lesson.
Lesson structure:
- Get Ready! Warm Up: Introduces and orients the students to the lesson.
- Learn and Try It: Activities include bite sized instruction coupled with guided practice.
- Workbook Pages: Offline work. Please be sure to have students show you their workbook pages daily to gauge if they are grasping the concept.
- Quiz: 1-2 ungraded questions that gauge student understanding OR a graded quiz on the final day of the concept.
Reading / ELA
We will finish reading Inside Out and Back Again. Then you will pick up your Editorial (TGA #3) to revise, proofread, and turn in to your HR teacher. Information for the TGA can be found in the OLS and in the English Language Arts Activity Workbook on page 323.
Unit 10, Lesson 15 is Writing Sample #4. In an effort to not have two writing assignments back-to-back we have added in days for students to work in MindPlay and overdue and/or not mastered ELA lessons. For students who need more time, they may work on Unit 10, Lesson 15 those days. Writing Sample #4 will be due Monday, April 5th
Please see below for the rubric (Grade 5 Writing Rubric) that will be used in grading your Teacher Graded Assignments (TGAs) this year and let that be your checklist before turning in your final drafts. If you have a printer, I recommend you print the rubric and keep it handy as you are working on your essays. This is the same rubric the State Department of Education will use to score your essay in April.
Inside Out and Back Again is a paperback that was sent with your K12 curriculum.
Seesaw Weekly Writing Prompts
Students have begun weekly writing practice in Seesaw. The prompts are assigned by the homeroom teacher through Seesaw, and students are expected to respond directly on the slide.
Science
In Unit 8 Physiology we will be learning about the human body systems and how they all work together to keep us growing and going.
Science is "optional," but attendance is highly encouraged as all 5th graders will be tested in Science on the OSTP in April.

Did your student turn in their Food Web Project?
Food Web Project (3/2 Unit 9 Lesson 3): Students should have made their own Food Web and turned in pictures of their projects to their Homeroom Teacher through Seesaw. Students can use art supplies, recyclables, and other items found at home to make their web. Webs must include 2-3 different Tertiary Consumers, 3-5 Secondary Consumers, 3-5 Primary Consumers, 2-3 Producers, and 2-3 Decomposers. All parts were covered in the OLS curriculum and in the Science class connects. Students are to put the content parts together along with their creativity. Tips and Tricks for a Smooth Year
- Attendance is extremely important for all class connects. Even though Science is considered “optional” it is still highly encouraged.
- Create a family schedule so everybody knows when students are in class connects
- Come prepared! Cook, eat, use the restroom, feed animals, do chores, run errands before/after class connects.
- Stay on track every day with the On-Track Calendar.
- Check USA Test Prep regularly for assignments, quizzes, and “Tickets Out the Door.”
- Email all teachers (Homeroom, Interventionist, SpEd) when the student will be absent.
- Clean out cache and cookies regularly to help with computer speed and memory.

- All OLS (Online School) lessons require 80% Mastery for completion. The video below demonstrates a lesson that has not been marked complete because it was not mastered by the student.

- It is highly encouraged students have 3 notebooks (simple one subject notebooks are perfect) so that they may take notes in Math, Reading and Science classes.
