Weekly Reminders April 13-17
Raven Homeschool, Juneau Office
Teacher Notes
My grand dog went back to Anchorage to my daughter this past week. The house is much quieter (and cleaner) ;-) without him. Our re-enrollment is going very well. Thank you to the families who let us know their 20-21 plans for next year. Happy Easter! Looks like it will be a sunny weekend. :-) ~Joan
Hi Families! As I write this, I am standing next to my home nursery of seedlings happy to know that spring is coming. Though it is frosty and cold, just seeing green things growing makes my heart glad. I'm grateful for another week of health. I'm grateful for the technology that allows me to stay in touch with you. And I'm grateful for the wonderful team I work with. It has been encouraging to see so many families re-enroll. Keep spreading the word! Hunker down and stay healthy! ~Theresa

This Week's Art Project: Quarantine Picture Journal Entry
Throughout history kids have kept journals of what is happening in their own personal lives as they live through tragic world events. The pictures and written journal entries they leave behind become history. In some instances, they become a part of our history books. An
excellent written example is the Diary of Anne Frank, her family had to hide in an attic from
Nazis for an extended period of time. She wrote what went through her mind, what people
were doing, and how it affected everyone around her. Her journals have been translated into a
multitude of languages, and kids all over the world read them in school. There have been many drawings and paintings by people who lived through events, that show a different perspective than what we might see in the history books. I grew up hearing stories about battles that took place in the west from a Native perspective. My grandma always told me to look for the stories of people who were there.
History is usually written by the winners, but there are often a variety of perspectives for any one event. This week, I want you to think about how you would describe this worldwide Pandemic. I think for many people in Alaska it has not changed their lives all that much. Some people are out of work, stores may not have as much in the way of choices, kids have to stay home from school, and some kids no longer get to play with their friends. For people in other parts of the world, life is really hard right now. People are hungry, afraid, and even dying. They are having a very different experience than we are. Think about 100 years from now, what do you imagine will be in the history books from this World Pandemic? If you could be in the history books, and you will, what will you tell the world about this time? Each person will have a different experience, and should write or draw what is happening to them personally.
For this assignment, I want you to draw a story about how this is changing your life. It is OK to draw your fears, your boredom, the fun things, the sad things, and even the annoying things. What you draw may someday end up as a historical document in the history of Alaska.
If you have not seen it yet, I am including the step by step drawing example for people.
I would really love to see your drawings, please email me copies. My email is rnear@yksd.com. I love getting copies of any art you do.

Williamsburg Learning Free Webinar - Thriving In Quarantine
We’re hosting a free webinar next week called Thriving In Quarantine: How to Help Your Teens Grow and Stay Connected During the Pandemic.
For youth—like all of us—living in the current pandemic can feel daunting and uncertain. Even more than adults, many teens are struggling to adapt to such huge changes to their normal lives. They may also be dealing with the sense that they can’t control their feelings or environment right now.
Does this sound like a teenager in your home?
If so, join me and James Ure at the webinar next Wednesday, April 15th, at 12:00 PM MT. We’ll show you a process for helping your teens see more opportunities to grow and connect during quarantine without feeling trapped by their circumstances.
What we’ll cover at the webinar:
- The neuroscience of fear and stress (or, how our brain chemistry can change in a crisis)
- Why resisting change increases suffering and blocks people from taking effective action
- Questions to ask yourself and your teens when you or they are feeling overwhelmed
- How to help your teenager identify and make the most of new opportunities
- Tips for bringing your family together and staying united during this crisis
We’ll also send you a copy of our new “How To Deal With A Crisis” worksheet that you can use to process the current situation individually and with your teens.
If you know other parents who could benefit from attending this webinar, please share this link with them. The webinar will be recorded, so even if you can't be there live, we'll send you the recording and your copy of the “How to Deal with a Crisis” worksheet.
Being in quarantine is a unique opportunity to connect with your teens on a deeper level. To make the most of this opportunity, I hope you’ll join us at the webinar. You’ll gain powerful tools and ideas to support your youth during this uncertain time.
See you then,
Adam Hailstone
