Holiday Parties - December 18
The parties will be lots of fun for our children. Please do not bring additional party goodies to your child's class.
We are requiring everyone to check in through our V-Soft Parent Access System. Pre-registering in advance will help us to facilitate this process efficiently and will hopefully help everyone avoid long lines the day of the party. All visitors must bring a photo ID to school in order to attend the party (even if your have pre-registered). If your license has not been scanned prior to Dec. 18 or you do not pre-register, you will need to check in at the front desk. The form was sent home with each student. You can access it on our website or get one from the front desk.
Additional Reminders about Party Day
If you are planning to sign your child out early and to take him/her home with you after the holiday party on December 18, please remember to send a note for the front office in the morning. If someone other than the parent or legal guardian is going to be signing your child out, please be sure to send a note stating who will be picking your child. They will need to go to the front office to sign them out after the party. Only the parent or legal guardian is authorized to sign out in the classroom. It becomes somewhat of a safety/security issue when signing large numbers of students out in a short period of time. Having the notes early int the day will be a tremendous help. All students who remain until the end of the school day (3:50) will be sent home via their regular mode of transportation. We appreciate your cooperation!

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS!!
I just wanted to take a moment of your time to say thank you for all that you library volunteers do and give you all a better understanding of what your volunteer time goes towards.
Coordinating the library is a big job but Denise and my hearts are in it. We love Julie and all that she does for our children. We cannot have the library run efficiently without you all, so we thank you for that.
Julie is always working hard to enrich our children's lives through many of the programs that she offers through the library.
One of the programs Julie hosts for our students is planning and organizing back pack dogs. She currently has 16 certified dogs that come into the library weekly and each dog reads with 3 children during its time. (Well the dog sits and the kids read) lol. There are wonderful volunteers that bring these dogs in to read with our kids, so we are very thankful for those volunteers as well. These dogs are certified therapy dogs and children are picked to read with them for many reasons....maybe they are shy, they may need additional help reading, and sometimes it is just to reward a child for excellent behavior.
Julie has several book clubs for grades 2nd-5th and in addition to those she also has "Name that book" club for the children. Julie meets with other librarians around the district and they come up with questions and quizzes. After the students read the books on the list Julie meets with them, quizzes them, studies with them, and takes them to the districts name that book competition. The children absolutely love these clubs and competitions.
Every week Julie has her famous book talks with each grade level. A lot of preparation goes in to book talks. She has meetings with each grade levels teachers to find out what their lesson plans are covering at the moment. Julie then creates a Power Point lesson plan of her own and integrates a book into the grade levels curriculum. If you have ever witnessed book talk then you already know how awesome Julie is and how much the students look forward to these. Whatever book she recommends tends to fly off the shelves and every student wants to read it. Which is an awesome thing!
Authors visits are the highlight of the year in library. In order to have authors visit the school Julie has to plan everything. She becomes a manager, travel agent, chauffeur, makes sure they eat, etc....It takes a lot of work to get an author to spend a day at our school. It is worth it when you see the students faces light up when they see Mother Goose or Phil Bildner just to name a couple.
The list goes on and on....story book parade, book fairs....
Black Elementary is around 30% economically disadvantaged, so for some of our students this may be their only opportunity to have new books to read at home every week. Reading is a necessary survival skill in this world. Reading also enhances the development of spoken language, introduces proper grammar, and enhances a child's ability to express themselves verbally.
Julie can only accomplish these things with the help of volunteers who help with checking students out and shelving books. So thank you all for donating your time! Thank you Julie for being amazing at what you do. We really appreciate you parent-volunteers giving back to the school library and to our students.
Thanks for letting me share exactly what you all are a part of. Again, we appreciate you all, and thank you.
Erica Wolfford
