Parts of a computer

all the bits and pieces of a basic computer

What is this page?

This short guide will show you how your computer works. So hopefully by the time you've read this you will know how your computer works and what the different parts of it are.

What is Random Access

Random Access Memory is a type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly.A random-access device allows stored data to be accessed directly in any random order.RAM (random access memory) is the place in a computer where the operating system, application programs, and data in current use are kept so that they can be quickly reached by the computer's processor. RAM is much faster to read from and write to than the other kinds of storage in a computer, the hard disk, floppy disk, and CD-ROM. However, the data in RAM stays there only as long as your computer is running. When you turn the computer off, RAM loses its data. When you turn your computer on again, your operating system and other files are once again loaded into RAM, usually from your hard disk.

What's touchscreen

Touch screen is technology that let's you to touch the screen rather than using a mouse which can be helpful at times.

For more information please press the link below. The resistive system consists of a normal glass panel that is covered with a conductive and a resistive metallic layer. These two layers are held apart by spacers, and a scratch-resistant layer is placed on top of the whole setup. An electrical current runs through the two layers while the monitor is operational. When a user touches the screen, the two layers make contact in that exact spot. The change in the electrical field is noted and the coordinates of the point of contact are calculated by the computer. Once the coordinates are known, a special driver translates the touch into something that the operating system can understand, much as a computer mouse driver translates a mouse's movements into a click or a drag.

What is the motherboard?

The motherboard controls the in and out signals from a computer, if you want it basically the heart or brain of a computer! A motherboard (sometimes alternatively known as the main board.A motherboard provides the electrical connections by which the other components of the system communicate (talk with each other).

.Desktop motherboards, cases and power supplies all come in different sizes called form factors. All three must be compatible to work properly together.

What is the Monitor?

The monitor is the basic screen you look at when you use a computer.

the photo Often referred to as a monitor when packaged in a separate case, the display is the most-used output device on a computer. The display provides instant feedback by showing you text and graphic images as you work or play.

Most desktop displays use liquid crystal display (LCD) or cathode ray tube (CRT) technology, while nearly all portable computing devices such as laptop incorporate LCD technology. Because of their slimmer design and lower energy consumption, monitors using LCD technology (also called flat panel or flat screen displays) are replacing the venerable CRT on most desktops.

What is a cpu?

A CPU is also known as the "Central Processing Unit" it basically manages all the thing inside your computer.

Hard drive

What is the hard drive?

Alternatively referred to as a hard disk drive and abbreviated a HD or HDD, the Hard Drive is the computer's main storage media device that permanently stores all data on the computer.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee

Who is Sir Tim Burners-Lee

Sir Tim Burners-Lee is a very famous computer scientist who invented the internet which changed the world forever.

input and output

What is imput and output

In computing, input/output or I/O (or informally, io or IO) is the communication between an information processing system (such as a computer) and the outside world, possibly a human or another information processing system.

What is ROM?

  • Read-only Memory, a type of storage media that is used in computers and other electronic devices
    • ROM cartridge, a portable form of read-only memory
    • ROM image, a computer file which contains a copy of the data from a read-only memory chip
  • Random oracle model, a mathematical abstraction used in cryptographic proofs
  • ROM (MUD), a popular MUD codebase
  • RoM, Request of Maintainer (see Software maintainer)

Peer Assessment

Tomos Bohanna - Very good use of information , Do you understand what the text for touch screen means cause I did not but the videos are really helpful and the buttons are useful.

Erin Matthews - Lots of information, videos are good:)

Emma Foster - very detailed but not sure you understand what you have written. i'm certain its not you own work, i think its wikipedias :)

Molly Flaherty - Good, one thing is when you are talking about input and output you have spelt input as imput :)

Emily Rogers - Great balence of videos pitures and information

Lucy Holmes - Good videos and pictures and lots of good description :)
