Hello, CTE Family!
Hope this finds everyone well. Multiple information releases have been shared that I wanted to organize into one document for your ease of use.
May all of you find time for fellowship with your colleagues this holiday season, even if it is in a virtual format. Look forward to seeing everyone in person in 2021. Extending warm wishes to you and your families for a healthy, safe, and relaxing holiday!

CTE Coffee & Conversation
This is an opportunity for CTE Leadership to work through local needs in a peer forum. We all need a Professional Learning Network, and CTE Coffee & Conversation meetings provide just that. This began as a COVID-19 support, but has worked so well in our region that we have decided to continue offering it into the future.

High School CyberStart America
Cybersecurity Continued Education and Scholarship Opportunity
Governor Greg Abbott has announced that Texas is partnering again with the SANS Institute in the CyberStart America Game, an innovative online cybersecurity game, formerly known as Girls Go CyberStart. The program, sponsored by the National Cyber Scholarship Foundation and the SANS Institute, is designed to encourage high school students to explore their aptitude for cybersecurity and computer science.
The program, which previously focused on recruiting female high school students in Texas to compete, is now open to all Texas students in grades 9-12. Participating students and their teachers do not need knowledge or experience in information technology or cybersecurity to take part, and the program is free for schools and students alike. As a result of the initiative’s efforts last year, 2,294 students from Texas high schools participated, and 199 succeeded in reaching the national finals.
Participating students will have the opportunity to win prizes and recognition for their schools and scholarships for themselves. The National Cyber Scholarship Foundation anticipates awarding scholarships worth a total of $2 million for use at any accredited college to 600 high-scoring students across the nation who participate in the competition in 2021. Students can compete for state-specific and community-specific prizes as well as national championship status. There will also be incentives for Texas high schools to encourage more students to reach the qualifying level in the CyberStart Game, including exclusive access to additional cybersecurity education resources and recognized cyber skills mastery badges for their students.
Complete details may be found at www.cyberstartamerica.org. The CyberStart Game began November 15, 2020, and concludes on April 4, 2021. Students may continue to register so long as they reach the National Cyber Scholarship Competition qualifying level in the Game by the cut-off date of March 8, 2021. Students will be informed that they qualify for the CyberStart National Scholarship Challenge Round as soon as they have achieved sufficient progress, but they are allowed to continue playing and learning in order to build more skills that will be useful to them in the National Scholarship Challenge. To see the types of challenges students will face in the games, visit https://go.cyberstart.com.
Participating students and schools are encouraged to share updates on social media with [#TXCyberStart].
SPED and CTE Update shared by TEA
Special Education certified teachers are approved to teach official CTE courses of Career Prep (open to ALL students).
This rule change for 19 TAC §231.271 (see below) under Requirements for Public School Personnel Assignments and is posted in the Texas Register. There is not an effective date posted yet, but most schools won’t be able to get their teachers the required Work-Based Learning (WBL) training right away. The ESCs are going to have to set up training schedules for that. I am sure there will be more information coming from TEA. You can also contact your CTE specialist.

Student Competition
2020 STEM Video Contest for Middle and High School Students
The 2020 STEM Video Contest, sponsored by State Farm, invites middle school students to describe an engineering career in a self-created video entitled Be An Engineer! High school students are invited to create a fun video around the topic Improving Life in the Future with Artificial Intelligence! Reaching younger kids to share how inspiring STEM paths are will pay off for these students and our community in the long run.
This contest seeks to help fill the Tech Titans STEM resource vault and provide professionals and educators compelling content to use while working with students. Videos will target elementary students, describe a technology or career, and create excitement about its future and how students can play a part in it. Middle school and high school winners in each area will receive $1,000.
This year, submissions will be accepted starting Thursday, October 1, and are due by Friday, January 15. Winners will be announced by March 1, 2021.
If you know any students who are creative, technical, or think video production is in their future, please let them know about this opportunity. If you know any educators, home school groups, or parents who would like an activity for their students, please share the STEM Video Contest. View our 2019 winners and promotion video to experience some creative and innovative students promoting STEM. All information may be found at STEM Video - Tech Titans
Volunteers, including technical experts, professionals, educators, and video production teams will be needed starting in October to help mentor student teams if they ask for help. Judges are also needed to give feedback to our aspiring producers during an evening set aside for judging in late January/early February 2021. Consider donating some time for this effort or contacting another source to help. Send a note to stem@techtitans.org to sign up for ~5 hours of a time commitment.
