Parent News April 2019
A note from Mr. Wiley
Over the past few months in newsletters, I have touched on some things I would like for my kids and yours alike to develop. In January, I shared that I wanted my kids to struggle well, to learn that struggling through something now sets us up to be able to get through more difficult times and grow through the process. In February, I talked about grit and trying to get my girls to recognize the effort and hard work (that we typically don’t witness) that goes into someone being successful. March, I was just done with snow days and whined about those…
Over spring break we went to Fayetteville to do a college visit with the oldest and as is typical with my wife and three daughters, they found a few shops to do some shopping. While they shopped, I had some time to catch up on social media. (Dads of daughters will understand…) While I was doing this, I came across a video that I thought tied in struggling well, grit and personal growth together.
The video, linked below, is from the senior night recognition at North Carolina for basketball player Joel Berry II. In the speech, Berry II explains that his 1st year was tough. He was not getting playing time he wanted and was questioning staying at NC. He talked to his parents who told him to “Look at yourself. What are you doing to give the coaches confidence to put you out on the court?” He shared that that conversation made all the difference and changed his career at NC.
While a college student is different from my high school junior, 8th grader and kindergartener, I think I can take some lessons from this in how I listen to and encourage my own kids. Whether it be sports, the classroom or at a job, many of us can recall times where we would have benefitted from looking inward when things weren’t going the way we thought. I know I am guilty. Hopefully while they are still with us, we can help our kids grow through tough opportunities by starting to look at how they can positively impact the situation.
The part of the video I referenced is from around the 1:00 mark to the 2:00 mark. Enjoy and keep doing the things we talked about in the March Newsletter to avoid another snow day. We do live in Kansas and Mother Nature is cranky…

8th Grade Boys Basketball
The 2019 Boys Basketball team finished their season with a record of 15 wins and only one loss. The team finished as the regular season and city tournament champions. Your Bulldogs only loss was a regular season game against Prairie Trail, that ended 61-62 in overtime. The Bulldogs successfully avenged their only loss of the season by winning the city tournament championship game, against PRT, by a score of 65-49.
This year’s team played wonderfully together, played tenacious defense, and set a number of offensive records. Coach Cole is sending a talented group of basketball players on to Olathe East, and is looking forward to watching them continue their success at the next level.
Go Bulldogs!
