Alphabet Practice
Theme: Friends All Around
Skills focused on: Hearing syllables or "parts in a word", hearing sounds in words, Introduction to rhyming, Letters names, sounds and writing
Letters this unit: Aa, Mm, Ss, Pp
Sight words (words you read by remembering them)
a, the, I, see, and, is
At Home: Please READ to your child
So much language, vocabulary and skill building happens during a read aloud. Please try and read to or with your child as often as you can!
* Read every night (10-15 minutes)
* Use any book--talk about pictures, read in your home language or make up a story!
* let it be a conversation-They do not have to just sit and listen!
*Ask at least one question after or during to encourage participation and understanding.
* Borrow books from the Lenexa library!
* Borrow out of the Little Free Library right here at Rising Star! (out front of the school)
Allow Books to be available to your child to enjoy at all times. TEACH them how to care for them vs worry they may ruin them!
Alphabet Work/Phonics
AT HOME:
* Bring attention to and talk about letters
(especially in their name, on their shirt,Around the house, or while driving-on signs--Like Walmart, Pizza Hut, and QT))
* Do not just "sing the ABC's"--- NAME them when you see them.
("Look that's the letter Aa like when we sing the alphabet song")
* Emphasize the sound at the beginning of words and say the name of the letter that makes that sound. One or 2 times a day makes a huge difference and helps them connect our learning to real life!
(Ex: "You want Milk?" OOooo Listen "Milk has the Mm sound, /mmmmm/....milk"
* Ask your child of they can name a letter when they see it "Look a Pp, Do you know what letter that is?"
*Praise them and repeat it when they get it!! "That's right that is a Pp"
Standards: CL.F.p4.1d Recognizes and names some upper and lowercase letters, in addition to those in their first name
Standard: CL.F.p4.3a: Demonstrates basic knowledge of letter sound correspondence by producing the sound of some letters.
CL.F.p4.3b Recognizes their own name in print
CL.F.p4.3c Recognizes and "read" familiar words or environmental print
Math
We will be working on the order of numbers this week! Specifically our focus is still on the numerals 0-5. This means counting objects in a group, seeing the numeral and knowing how many to match with the numeral and putting the numerals/groups in order.
At Home:
* Practice counting objects (toys, dolls, shoes, rocks!)
* Notice and name numbers on signs/clocks
*Have your child follow your direction using numbers "set out 4 plates for dinner" or "Find me 2 legos"
Standard: M.CC.p4.1 Counts in sequence to 30.
M.CC.p4.2 represents a group of objects with a written numeral
M.CC.p4.4a Uses one-to-one correspondence when counting groups of objects
Literacy Work
This month we will be introducing many new skills including syllables in words and rhyming. We will be clapping and counting how many syllables or "parts" are in a word (EX: /tur/+/tle/= turtle; or clapping or snapping out syllables ap-ple= 2 claps) We will begin rhyming by hearing similar sounds, similar words.
Standard: CL.F.p4.2b: Blends and segments syllables in spoken words
Standard: CL.F.p4.2a: Recognizes and produces rhyming words
Writing Activities
Any writing practice is useful. This can be done on a dry erase board, chalkboard/sidewalk chalk or pencil/crayon/marker with paper. always encourage correct finger placement on writing utensils. (Tracing apps on I-pads do not encourage good writing skills)
- Draw pictures! This is one of the first stages of writing.
- Practice writing their first name. Remember only the first letter should be capital, can you make the rest small?
- Practice writing the ABC's or Numbers 1-12
- Remember at this age our letters do not have to look perfect. Scribbles are writing too!
Important Information
* During the month of September we will be administering our formal assessment tool with all students. It is called the My individual growth development indicators (myIGDI). This is a tool we use to gather more data in the areas of math and reading. The results of this assessment help me, as the teacher, plan lessons/small groups and individual goals with students along with many other sets of data we collect as well.
* PENCIL GRIP...The ability to hold a writing utensil (Pencil, crayon, marker, or paint brush) is a very difficult skill for many students year after year. Students at this age should be able to grasp a writing tool with their fingers, hold the tool tightly and and begin to make marks on paper. (See image) Working on this skill takes time, and practice. Below are ways you can help your child at home to improve the muscles, coordination and skills needed for an improved writing grip.
* Activities that involve squeezing, pinching, pulling, gripping: clothespins, tweezers, tongs, eye-droppers, spray bottles, stamps
* Make time to Draw/color/Write
*Break crayons or chalk into smaller pieces
*Draw on a slanted surface (easel, tape paper to a wall)
* practice different lines (straight, slant, circles)
