March Parent Newsletter 2023
Spring Break is just around the corner! The next two weeks, students and teachers are focused on our 3 School-wide Expectations: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible. These three expectations can be applied to any location in our building. Students are earning Super Seahorse Cards and Spirit sticks when they model these expectations. Please speak to your child about the importance of these characteristic in school in out of school.
When we return in March, we will conclude the 3rd quarter and jump right into the District Quarter Benchmark Testing. Please check the schedule below for your child's assigned grade level day.
We are looking forward to all the great things the end of the school year brings!

Student Progression
It is hard to believe we have almost completed three quarters of the school year. At this time of year, teachers and staff start having hard conversations about decisions about possible retention based on state assessments, district assessments, iReady, classroom performance on module assessments and other daily and weekly performance on standard based assessments in the content areas of Reading, Writing, Math, and Science.
Student Progression letters went out to students who are working below grade level. The letter is the first notification of possible retention. This does NOT mean your child will be retained. This notification is alerting parents that their child is not being successful with grade level material. At the fourth quarter interim, the second notification will go out to you and the final decision about retention will happened the last week of school.
Guidelines for determining promotion, promotion with remediation, or retention, are as follows:
Promotion: A student may be promoted when approximately 80% of the standards in reading and two of the three subjects of mathematics, writing, and/or science have been mastered.
Promotion with Remediation: A student may be promoted with remediation when approximately 80% of the standards in reading and two of the three subjects of mathematics, writing, and/or science indicate progress toward, but not mastery of grade level standards.
Retention: A student may be considered for retention when he or she is not progressing toward grade level standards even with support and the above criteria for retention indicate this is in the best interest of the student.
If you have any questions pertaining to Student Progression please contact your teacher.
Student Discipline
Spring Break is quickly approaching, and we have experienced a rise in discipline incidences occurring in classrooms and on the playground. Our staff remains diligent with reminding students of the PBIS expectations for behavior at school: Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible. To support and promote positive behavior at school and at home, I encourage you to have your child share their understanding of PBIS behaviors. Help them to understand what those character traits look like at home, at school and in the community as they interact with others. Please discuss the importance of safe hands and using appropriate problem-solving when interacting with peers. There are several adults who interact with your child each day. They are more than willing to assist with issues that arise. Please encourage your child to seek the help of an adult if they are unable to resolve a conflict effectively on their own.
CELL PHONES and SMART WATCHES:
If it is necessary for your child to bring a cell phone to school, it must be turned off and left in their backpack during school hours. If your child wears a SMART watch to school, it must be used for telling time only. Any communication with home, during school hours, should be done through the teacher or main office. This includes change of transportation. Students should not text, make phone calls, or take photos or videos with their watch. All phones and watches will be stored during district and state testing, as stated in the CCPS protocols. The school is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged devices.

The CCPS Dress Codes governs the way students should be dressed for school. Students are encouraged to wear hats and sunscreen when playing in the sun.
1. Appropriate shoes are to be worn at all times. For safety, tennis shoes must be worn for Physical Education class. Please be mindful, students have recess every day and closed toes shoes should be worn. Flip-flops should not be worn at any time, as they can be a safety concern on the playground or during an emergency situation. Shoes modified for uses other than walking or running are not permitted.

SGE's 3rd Annual Kindness Month was a success! We had an action packed month filled with all things KIND: classroom guidance lessons, kindness breathing techniques, many random acts of kindness, 4th Grade collecting and tagging shoes for laces of love, random acts of kindness, our Friendship Club selling "Smencils" to benefit Laces of Love, celebrating our Students of the Month, decorating coffee sleeves for a local Starbucks, and more. Extra love and kindness filled our halls as we watched our Kindness Thermometer rise. We completed our Great SGE Kindness Challenge of over 4,000 acts of kindness! We ended the month showing our love for our school with our 3rd Annual "I Love SGE" Day. Special thanks to our Spirit Club and Xylophone Club for spreading the SGE love. What fun! One thing is for certain, SGE has a culture of kindness! Our March focus is honesty. It's important for our children to know that honesty means far more than "not telling a lie." It is being truthful in what we say and do. Being honest will help our seahorses become a trustworthy person and using their conscience to guide their decision making. In our March Guidance Lesson, seahorses will learn a good strategy when it comes to honesty: THINK. Is it True? Is it Helpful? Is it Inspiring? Is it Necessary? Is it Kind?
