Reading Month
March is READING MONTH and the PTA is looking for a few parents to volunteer to decorate the hallway leading to the Pierce Commons to go along with our theme “Books are Portals to Different Worlds”. If you are interested in learning more and volunteering to decorate, please email pierceelementarypta@gmail.com. We are likely looking to put up the decorations sometime the week of Feb 26. THANK YOU!
Book Fair- March 20 & 21
Get ready! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming our way (YAY!)
Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them to become bolder, prouder, and stronger readers – AND, as always, every book they buy earns rewards for our school.
The book fair will take place in the Pierce Media Center from 1:00 pm – 8:00 pm (with a break from 4:00 pm– 5:00 pm) on March 20 and 21 during Parent/Teacher Conferences.
Volunteers are needed to help during the book fair with purchases & assisting families in locating books. We also need help setting up the book fair on March 13, and taking it down on March 22. If you are able to help, please sign up below.
Conference Dinners & Stock the Lounge
One of the ways our Panther community supports our staff and teachers is by providing dinner during Parent/Teacher Conferences. PTA sponsors the purchase of the main meal from a local restaurant, but we need your help rounding out the meal. Please consider donating for conference dinners and re-stocking the staff lounge!
In-School Volunteer Needs
Front Office & Staff Support
Volunteers will be helping with teacher requests (copying, laminating, etc) along with miscellaneous front office tasks. We appreciate the help every school day! There are 2 shifts/day: mornings = 9AM – 10AM & afternoons = 2:30PM – 3:30PM. If you can help, please sign up here!
Art Show Set-Up
During conferences, our amazing art teachers will be displaying student art throughout the building for parents to see. If you are available to help set up during the weeks leading up to conferences, or help take down the art after conferences end, please sign up here!

Pierce’s very own Mrs. Jotanovic, 2nd grade teacher, has been nominated for Best Teacher in Metro Detroit in this year’s Hour Detroit “Best of Detroit 2024” ballot. Please take the time between now and March 15 to vote – we are so grateful for Mrs. Jotanovic and all our amazing Pierce teachers & staff!
Friends of Difference Learners
FRIENDS is sponsoring two exciting community events coming up. Both events will be held at the Birmingham Covington School Media Center and are open and free to all!
Thursday, March 7th at 7 pm: Sara Fentress-Gannon, the new president of SAIL, and Kathleen Remski, the past president of SAIL, will be presenting. SAIL (Solutions for Adult Interdependent Living) supports families as they dream, create, and develop a housing vision for a loved one with special needs.
Thursday, April 4th at 7 pm: Jenny Stewart from Signing Courses ASL will be presenting. Signing Courses ASL is aimed at revolutionizing communication and education within Birmingham Public Schools. The focal point of this initiative is the seamless integration of simple sign language into both early education and special education settings. This innovative approach envisions classrooms and programs equipped with ASL materials and resources where communication can extend beyond conventional boundaries.
