Volunteer of the Week ~Timeri McCloud~
Timeri has been volunteering at Sierra Verde since 2017. She has helped out in the classrooms for both of her boys since then- she has Keaton in 5th grade and Sutter in 3rd grade. Timeri has volunteered at multiple book fairs and has been a homeroom parent several times. Not only is Timeri a volunteer at the school but she works at SV too in the cafeteria. When she is not at SV, Timeri enjoys music, reading, hiking, biking and puzzles. She loves to travel with her family too. Thank you for all that you do at SV, Timeri! We appreciate you!
Donor's Choose
Thanks to your support, the PTSO was able to fund all Donors Choose projects on Tuesday- that’s $6,868 worth of teachers projects! We are so excited to see all of the equipment in their classrooms helping out our students! Remember- attending restaurant nights, BINGO and becoming a PTSO member all help raise these funds that go back to our teachers and students.
Below you will see the learning locks for kindergarten literacy stations that were funding thanks to Donor's Choose. Thanks to PTSO and all our parents for helping provide these resources for our Vipers!
Priority Open Enrollment 23-24
Open Enrollment is underway for the 2023– 2024 school year. Through Open Enrollment, your child has the opportunity to attend any school of their choice, if capacity permits. If you currently have an 8th grader that will be attending Mountain Ridge High School next year and Mountain Ridge is not your home school, you need to apply for open enrollment by December 05, 2022 for priority consideration. If you have another student starting school next year in any grade and your current student is on open enrollment, you should also apply by December 2022. Priority will be given to siblings of currently enrolled students if grade level capacity permits. You must apply online at dvusd.org/openenrollment. It is not necessary to reapply for Open Enrollment for currently enrolled students at Sierra Verde, only new students wishing to attend.
For those of you with family, friends, or neighbors looking to attend SV next year, it is essential that you get an application ASAP and prior to the the closing of our priority window. In most grades, we typically have to waitlist most students if they apply after December.
Families will be notified if the application has been approved or denied via email in January 2023. Upon notification, a registration must be completed online, no later than 10 days after notification of the decision, or the student potentially forfeits the approved Open Enrollment and may need to reapply.
If you have any questions, please contact the front office at 623-376-4800.
SV New Era Hats Available
There will also be a one size child/youth all black cap available for purchase as well that will fit our youngest Vipers better than the adult 39thirty. Please be sure to order the correct size on our website as we will not have extra hats on hand to exchange sizes.
Standards Based Mindset at Sierra Verde
Sierra Verde is aligned to the DVUSD Standards-based mindset, which helps guide our staff in tracking and reporting academic performance related to the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards.
Students are expected to complete daily practice assignments/homework to reinforce skills and concepts learned in class. In-process learning assignments will be factored into a student’s final grade, but will only count for 1% of the entire grade. Daily assignments are essential in developing the skills and knowledge in order to excel on the summative assessments. Assessments will be 99% of a student’s final grade. There will be no opportunities for extra credit. Grades take into consideration mastery of standards and skill development. All grades are supported by appropriate documentation (e.g., anecdotal notes, work samples, checklists, portfolios, rubrics, projects, tests, performance assessments, etc.). The grade a student receives on any assignment will reflect an accurate assessment of the student’s performance on the assessment. No individual test, performance assessment, assignment, or project should be more than 25% of the total grade.
It is absolutely imperative that students keep up with classwork, daily assignments and discussions in order to fully comprehend and grasp the material. These in-process learning assignments directly impact student performance on assessments. A standards-based mindset also embraces allowing students opportunities to show learning through reassessment when appropriate.
We will continue to provide updates and clarification throughout the year regarding these best-practices for grading and reporting on student learning. We are proud of the work our students, staff, and administration are doing to align definitions of mastery and essential standards across our district, leading the state in proficiency and growth for all students in DVUSD.

Mindfulness Monday (Tuesday) Challenge of the Week
Good manners cost nothing. But while these gifts are free to give, the simple offerings of being polite and kind - like saying please and thank you, listening carefully, and making eye contact with people - can bring huge benefits to ourselves and those around us. They can help us appear more confident, maintain more fulfilling personal relationships, and generally enjoying happier and healthier lives. By practicing good manners, we are showing those around us that we respect them and are considerate to their feelings. This makes them feel better, and us too.
Challenge of the Week: Be mindful this week of the things that other people do for you throughout each day, both at school and home, and make an effort to say "please" and "thank you".
