ConVal High School Happening - November 12, 2021
Message From Principal McKillop
I hope the message finds you dry on this very rainy day. Despite a four-day week, there were still many things happening on campus; please read below to learn about some things happening in classrooms.
Please note that the craft fair takes place at ConVal tomorrow, November 13, and our shoe drive will end next Wednesday. Both are fundraising events to benefit worthwhile causes and we would like to thank you for your support.
Congratulations to our students who recently earned industry-recognized credentials (IRCS)! Please read below for a list of our students who have already earned an IRC and more information about how to obtain one.
In closing, I would like to extend my gratitude to any veterans we have here in our ConVal community. If you are a veteran, thank you for serving our country.
Best,
Heather

Statistics Students Learn To Determine Confidence Intervals
There is an air of friendly competition among the 25 juniors and seniors in Sam Winslow's Statistics class. Today's challenge to the students who are working in groups or individually: to determine confidence intervals when certain variables, such as the population mean (μ), are unknown.
A confidence interval displays the probability that a certain parameter will fall between a pair of values around the mean. In other words, it measures the degree of certainty or uncertainty in a sampling method. Confidence intervals are most often constructed using levels of 95% or 99%.
Anatomy & Physiology I Students Study Muscular System
Students in Anna Muncy’s Anatomy & Physiology I class study the body’s muscular system by creating personalized notebooks and models.
The notebooks reflect the students’ individual learning styles and creativity. Handcolored diagrams of muscular groups are identified by type — for example, striated or smooth — and carefully annotated.
Using their Chromebooks for additional research on the Internet, students explore the various muscle groups and tendons responsible for coordinated hand movements before creating hand models that illustrate the principles of hand muscle control.
College Composition Students Engage In Peer Editing
Working in groups or individually, students in Lisa Carne’s College Composition class engage in a peer editing exercise.
Looking at anonymous comparison and contrast submissions from a previous class, students critically engage with samples of student writing by highlighting where effective writing strategies were used and where the writing could have been improved.
“The editing exercise is an important step in the preparation of students before they engage in their own writing,” notes Carne. “Learning from prior examples allows students to be more purposeful when they start to work on their own comparison-contrast essays.”

ATC/Region 14 Information and Update
Students in career and technical education (CTE) programs are enrolled in classes that are preparing them to exit high school and move along their individual pathways to success, which includes college for some while others move straight into careers. One way that Region 14 Applied Technology Center students are setting themselves apart from the crowd is by earning Industry Recognized Credentials or IRCs. According to CredentalsMatter.org, “industry-recognized credentials convey a student’s career readiness because they validate the knowledge and skills required for success in a given occupation or industry. In fact, full-time employees with an industry credential earn more than their counterparts without one, and in some cases, the salaries of non-degree credential holders’ were found to be similar to workers with college degrees.”
So, what kind or IRCs can students at the Region 14 ATC earn? This year, some students have already earned their OSHA10 certifications (Construction Trades program), First Aid/CPR/AED certificates (Careers in Education program), and Licensed Nursing Assistant certificates. Other certifications students can earn in our CTE programs include Microsoft, Adobe, Solidworks, and CISCO. Not sure if your program offers a certification? Ask your teacher! Did your student earn a cert? Be sure to congratulate them! Here are some of our students who have taken another step down the path to success:
