Suicide Prevention Awareness Month: Pain isn't always obvious. Join our FPA Social Work team for a virtual parent workshop on Tuesday, September 21 at 5:30 p.m. to discuss ways to safeguard children's emotional health.

Flu and Meningitis Vaccination: The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each fall. Learn more about influenza here.

Meningococcal meningitis is caused by bacteria and may result in blindness, hearing loss, mental retardation, loss of limbs or death. All students entering 7th and 12th grade must have the meningococcal vaccine. Without it, a student is not permitted to attend school. Read our full meningitis vaccine notice here.

Hispanic Heritage Month: Starting on September 15, we begin the Hispanic Heritage celebrations on each campus. We will celebrate our Latinx Community as a Network the evening of October 7. Time and location are still to be determined. Please save the date!

Title 1 meeting: You are invited to join our annual meeting to talk about our school improvement plan, family engagement plan and your rights as parents. What’s going on at each of our schools

At FPA Westwood, our vision is to enhance our students' love for learning while they grow academically in a safe, intentional, and socially-emotionally rich learning environment--by any means necessary! Our team has been all-in on this mindset as we've navigated the first two weeks of school with MAP testing, COVID testing and protocols, and more. A special shout-out to our SEL Calming Center Winners, Ms. Morton/Ms.Whitehead (1st grade) and Mrs. Wicks/Ms. Martin (5th grade)! Calming Centers are available in every classroom for students to use any time they need to restore their behavior or emotions. Instead of a punitive approach, we are making sure that we can foster a restorative approach for students as a piece of how we infuse Social-Emotional Learning.

We've found our groove for the school year with everyone showing up and willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that our students are learning. In just a short period of time, we have learned so much about our students and ourselves and have collected so much data to help us pinpoint each student's needs to help them excel.

This year, we welcome a new campus aide, Ms. Erica Taylor, to our team, and Ms. Beard will join the third grade team to support with intervention and homeroom in Spelman! Be sure to say hello to them both if you see them around campus!

We love being back on campus! Shout out to our teachers for using morning meetings to bring the joy factor! They're using that time to really engage students and see where they are in the mornings before instruction.

Don't forget: Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for September 23!

We've had an amazing two weeks welcoming our students back to school and our building after a year and a half! Students are eager to learn and engage during class time. They come prepared for class, almost always having everything they need, and are receptive to a new mindset. Just a few observations and shout-outs from the first two weeks:

• Chorale Class is so ready to begin singing they really can’t contain themselves! Ta’Shylia Young made choral flashcards for Day 3 of learning.

• AP Art came with it in week one!

• Spanish II students were a bit thrown off but eager and accepting for 90% Spanish in class. SO PROUD of Spanish team and their lessons! Lots of energy in class.

• Afternoon English III classes are enthusiastic and on task!

• 4 H Algebra II and 5 Algebra II students supported each other and cheered for each others’ success in every class every day.

• 9th graders are engaged in the lessons.

Overall, we've had a great start, and our high school team is fired up and ready to continue to build and set a strong culture of our core values, of academic challenge, and of making our mission a reality for our students.

¡El año escolar 2021-22 ha tenido un buen comienzo! Nuestra visión en la Primaria de Westwood es aumentar el amor de nuestros estudiantes por aprender mientras crecen académicamente en un entorno de aprendizaje seguro, intencional y socio-emocional, ¡por cualquier medio que sea necesario! Nuestro equipo ha estado totalmente involucrado en esta mentalidad mientras estuvimos en las primeras dos semanas de escuela con pruebas MAP, protocolos y pruebas de COVID, y más. ¡Un reconocimiento especial a nuestros ganadores del Centro de Relajación de SEL, la Sra. Morton/Sra. Whitehead (1er grado) y la Sra. Wicks/Ms. Martin (quinto grado)! Los Centros de Relajación están disponibles en cada salón de clases para que los estudiantes usen el tiempo que necesiten para recuperar su comportamiento y/o sus emociones. En lugar de un enfoque hacia el castigo, nos aseguramos de que podamos fomentar un enfoque restaurativo para los estudiantes como parte de cómo infundimos el aprendizaje socioemocional.

Hemos encontrado nuestro ritmo para el año escolar con todos presentes y dispuestos a hacer lo que sea necesario para asegurar que nuestros estudiantes estén aprendiendo. En tan solo un corto período de tiempo, hemos aprendido mucho sobre nuestros estudiantes y sobre nosotros mismos y hemos recopilado tantos datos para ayudarnos a identificar las necesidades de cada estudiante para ayudarlos a sobresalir.

Este año, damos la bienvenida a nuestro equipo a una nueva asistente del campus, la Sra. Erica Taylor, también la Sra. Beard se unirá al equipo de tercer grado para apoyar con la intervención y el salón de clases en Spelman. ¡Asegúrate de saludarlos a ambos si los ves en el campus!

Y aparten esta fecah: ¡el jueves 16 de septiembre es nuestra Noche Virtual de Regreso a Clases! ¡Busque más detalles próximamente!

¡Nos encanta estar de regreso en el campus! ¡Felicitaciones a nuestros maestros por usar las reuniones matutinas para llenarnos de alegría! Están usando ese tiempo para involucrar a los estudiantes y ver dónde se encuentran antes de las clases.

Aparte esta fecha: ¡Las conferencias de padres y maestros están programadas para el 23 de septiembre!

¡Hemos tenido dos semanas increíbles dando la bienvenida a nuestros estudiantes a la escuela y a nuestro edificio después de un año y medio! Los estudiantes están ansiosos por aprender y participar durante las clases. Vienen preparados para la clase, casi siempre tienen todo lo que necesitan y son receptivos a una nueva mentalidad. Compartimos algunas observaciones y agradecimientos de las dos primeras semanas:

• ¡La clase de Coro está tan lista para empezar a cantar que realmente no pueden contenerse! Ta’Shylia Young hizo unas tarjetas didácticas de coro para el tercer día de aprendizaje.

• ¡La clase de AP Art inició en la primera semana!

• Los estudiantes de Español II estaban un poco desconcertados, pero estaban ansiosos y aceptaban el 90% de español en clase. ¡ESTAMOS ORGULLOSOS del equipo de español y sus clases! Hay mucha energía en el salón.

• ¡Los grupos de inglés III de la tarde son muy entusiastas y están concentrados!

• Los estudiantes de 4 H Álgebra II y 5 Algebra II se apoyaron mutuamente y se animaron por el éxito de los demás en cada clase cotidianamente.

• Los estudiantes de noveno grado están muy comprometidos en las clases.

En general, hemos tenido un gran comienzo y nuestro equipo de la preparatoria está entusiasmado y listo para construir y establecer una cultura sólida alrededor de nuestros valores fundamentales, de desafío académico y de hacer realidad nuestra misión para nuestros estudiantes.
