Clayton Ridge Schools: December 2018
Where Excellence is the Tradition
CRMS & CRHS Student Appreciation Video
Teachers chose one student out of the many who impact them every day. The students were shown the video on Friday, December 21, as a reminder of how much we have to be proud of at Clayton Ridge and how much the teachers are proud to be part of our students' lives.
Fourth Grade Show Off Their Holiday Hats
CRES Eagle Pride Store
In conjunction with our school Wellness Policy, students at Clayton Ridge Elementary had the opportunity to sample a pita bread appetizer. The purpose of taste tests is to give students the opportunity to experience new foods that they may not have had and promote healthy eating. The recipe is included below if you would like to try this at home for the holidays!
Pita Tree Appetizers
Ingredients
4 flavored or plain pita folds or pita (pocket) breads (about 6 inches in diameter)
16 thin pretzel sticks, halved
1/2 cup fat-free sour cream
1/2 cup guacamole
2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley
1/4 teaspoon garlic-pepper blend
1/4 cup very finely chopped red bell pepper
Steps
Cut each pita fold into 8 wedges. Insert pretzel stick half into center of the bottom of each wedge to form "tree trunk."
In a small bowl, mix sour cream, guacamole, parsley. and garlic-pepper blend. Spread about 1 teaspoon sour cream mixture on each pita wedge.
Blot bell pepper with a paper towel to remove excess moisture. Sprinkle about 1/4 teaspoon bell pepper on each wedge or arrange to form a garland. If desired, cover and refrigerate up to 8 hours before serving.
Clayton Ridge Celebrates Hour of Code
To celebrate Computer Science Education Week Clayton Ridge CSD is participating in Hour of Code 2018! The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. Hour of Code 2018 officially begins on Monday, Dec. 3rd and is an opportunity for every student to try computer science coding activities for one hour. As you can see, third graders are intently focused on their coding creations. But coding doesn't just have to be a once a year activity - for more information about Hour of Code and additional activities to try go to: https://code.org/learn.

Koins for Kids Christmas Give Away Fund Drive
The Clayton Ridge High Intro to Business Class sponsored a “Koins for Kids” Campaign. We collected just over $800 for the Clayton County Christmas give away to families in need. Local businesses put out collection cans for us and helped us reach our goal .We also received checks from local businesses. This is a great lesson that giving anything adds up. Over $600 was from change! The change really adds up when everyone contributes. The Intro to Business class would like to say, “Thank you” to everyone who donated.

Getting Ready to Race
Students set up cars they created in Mr. Aaron Mueller’s Power Technology class. The vehicles are aerodynamically designed and powered on compressed gas. Wires are strung on the floor to keep the cars running straight as they head to the finish line.

Chemo Care Kits
Clayton Ridge Community School District (CRCSD) and Springdale Gifts are partnering for the fourth annual Chemo Care Kit service project benefiting cancer patients. This past February, CRCSD students teamed up with my side business, Springdale Gifts, to put together over 40 Thirty-One Gifts bags full of goodies for chemo patients in honor of Judy Puls, a long-time Clayton Ridge teacher and nine-year survivor of ovarian and uterine cancer. Our CR family has been shaken by additional cancer diagnoses in the past year, so rather than choosing one to honor this year, let’s do this in honor of all of them!
Included in the bags are unscented hand sanitizer, unscented lotion, unflavored lip balm, bottled water, water flavor packets, sugar-free hard candy, a puzzle book (crossword, word find, or Sudoku), a coloring book, a journal/notepad, pencils and pens, colored pencils, and a pencil sharpener.
How does this all work? Through the generosity of friends, colleagues, and family members, Springdale Gifts is able to provide Thirty-One Gifts bags (Cinch Sacs and All-In Organizers). CRCSD students and staff who wish to participate donate items to fill the bags. (Note: Springdale Gifts provides the coloring books thanks to the big-hearted owner of Horsfals in Lansing, Iowa, who recently lost his wife to cancer.) Monetary donations toward the purchase of more bags and items to fill them are also accepted and very much appreciated. Once all the “stuffings” are collected, students will gather after school to fill the bags, after which they will be delivered to Medical Associates Clinic, Dubuque.
Every year we receive thank-you notes and encouraging social media posts from patients. One patient wrote in a letter, “I am an 81-year-old lady with Hodgkins Lymphoma...who was receiving chemo on Monday when an oncology nurse handed me and other patients a beautiful bag filled with many fun and useful gifts…It was a bright spot in our day. I’m impressed and thankful to be remembered in our journey. It’s people like you who give us hope. God bless.”
The Christmas season is a time for giving, and we are often inundated with opportunities to do so. I apologize for adding one more request to the many you’ve already received this year. This opportunity, however, extends into early 2019, so those wishing to participate can take advantage of after-Christmas sales. Donations should be delivered to my classroom (Room 210) or to the middle school or elementary school offices by Wednesday, January 31. Kit contents are listed above. Please feel free to address any questions or comments, including ideas for other kit contents, to me (x427) at the high school.
