School Readiness
When and where do children get ready for school? It takes place at home and begins at birth! It all starts even before children are able to hold a pencil or count to 10. Babies are born learning and are naturally curious. To be ready for school, children need a strong foundation in language and literacy skills, thinking skills, and social-emotional skills. Skills like self-control, self-confidence, getting along with others, and the abilities to concentrate and cooperate are necessary for school success. Consider the following strategies to support children’s school readiness.
- Read out loud and sing.
- Repeat children’s favorite songs and stories as often as your child likes.
- Talk a lot. During mealtime, talk about the color, texture, and smell of the food you are eating. On the playground, talk about the birds, trees, and animals you see.

Model Writing
Sensory Exploring
Small Group
Teachers can help students develop an understanding that there is a relationship between written and spoken sounds through lots of fun activities that help students explore the alphabet letters and sounds. Teachers can do this by providing individualized alphabet instruction, especially during the small-group time.
Learning about "Letters"
- recognize and name upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet
- associate letter names and symbols with their sounds
- understand that letter symbols are grouped together in a particular order to form words
- experiment with writing letters of the alphabet in the context of writing for a purpose
- Teaching the letter formation verbal pathways
