Dear Families,

We wanted to send our weekly update out early this week as Monday is a holiday. We hope that everyone is able to enjoy some time outside with friends and family doing things that bring joy this weekend.

We are deep into learning and focusing on the Science of Reading at Glenburnie. Many new resources have made their way into our classrooms and our educators are learning and working to bring researched based teaching techniques and strategies that target literacy gaps in reading and writing. Big thanks to our dedicated team for their passion for continued learning and diving into resources so that we are doing what is best for kids. See below for online and free decodable books that children can use at home, if interested.

Track and Field

Pratices will continue to take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 8:15 and during some recesses. We just have one more week to get ready for the regional tournament on May 26th.

In addition, two practises will take place at the Caraco field for our kids to practice the running events, as well as the pit jumping and shotput. We will not be practising high jump at these practices, but will continue to practice high jump at our school. The dates for these practises will be this Friday, May 19 from 5:30 to 7 PM and next week Tuesday, May 23 from 5 to 6 PM. We are hoping to get as many kids to these practices as possible as it will make our meet day much easier for them as they will have had practice time on the actual track and pits. Parents are asked to drive their children to and from these practices at Caraco.

The Regional Track Meet for GPS is on Friday May 26th. Remember to cancel your pizza order if your child will be away that day. The top 5 in each event will move on to the District Meet on Monday, June 5th!

Please return all permission forms ASAP if you haven't already.

Fun Fair

Save the date!!! On June 17th our School Council and leadership team are planning an amazing day of free fun for our families and community. There will be games, prizes, food, inflatables, face painting and so much more. What a wonderful way to come out and enjoy time with friends and family at our beautiful school. And the best part...the only cost will be the food. Please feel free to bring family and friends with you to enjoy the day. In order to plan better, we are hoping to get an idea of numbers. Please complete this form to indicate how many people will be attending and how many hamburgers/hot dogs you anticipate them wanting. We also want to make sure that we know of dietary restrictions so that we can provide appropriate options for all.

Hot Dog Days

As part of fundraising for Grade 8 Graduation, we had one hot dog day on Thursday and will have another on June 8th. Hot dogs will be available for order on School-Day the week before.

EQAO

Our Grade 3 & 6 students began EQAO testing this week. Although the majority is now finished, the remaining pieces will be finished up over this week and next.

Glenburnie Gives

Glenburnie is starting a new project called “Glenburnie Gives”. Every year Glenburnie will choose a new charity and do a fundraiser. This year Glenburnie chose the Kingston Food Bank, Partners In Mission. Their goal is: “To provide nourishment, hope and support in our community with an opportunity for all to share”. Monetary and food donations help them to nourish local families by providing groceries through their food hamper program. Being the food distribution centre for this area, they also donate surplus provisions to over twenty local hot meal and shelter programs in the Kingston area. Both canned goods and money donations are welcome. If you would like to donate money donate to this website: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/glenburnie-ps-gives-partners-in-mission-food-bank/

If you would like to research more about Partners In Mission here is link to there website:

Freeze Fridays!!

In order to raise funds for our Grade 8 graduation, Freezes will be on sale every Friday in May & June. $1 for half a jumbo and $2 for a full jumbo. Due to the large number of students away at Track & Field on Friday, there will no Freeze sales this week.

Looking forward to a great week ahead!

A Few Reminders...

Bingo

We need your help! Please consider volunteering (2 hours) even a few times a year to support our school and ensure that so many bingo funded opportunities continue to be possible. In addition to field trips, sports and bussing, some of the things that Bingo has paid for include but are not limited to: Boo Bash, Holiday Concert, Kindergarten Storage Shed, Courtyard refresh, Ukuleles, Hot Dog and Popcorn Days, Milkshakes, Fun Fair, Outdoor Sports equipment, Mask Making, Brave Workshops. Please email melharding991@gmail.com today to lend your help.

Pick up Safety

In order to ensure safety at pick up time, parents are asked to please cross the street to meet your child on the grassy median rather than having them cross the road on their own. Thank you very much for understanding and adhering to this important safety reminder.

Ticks

Unfortunately the nice weather also brings out ticks. Please review information from KFLA regarding ticks and lyme disease in our area and be vigilant about checking your child each day.

Volunteers

Any parents wishing to volunteer need to have a valid CPIC (with vulnerable sectors check), Offense Declaration form and an Oath of Confidentiality in order to go on a trip. CPICs are completed at the Kingston Police Department and can be requested in person or on-line. Offense Declarations and and Oath of Confidentiality can be signed at the office.

Masking Requirements / Covid Screener - A reminder that anyone (child or staff) who has been sick (any sickness) or has been in close contact with someone who has tested positive, is required to wear a mask at school for 10 days from the onset of symptoms or exposure.

- Please remember to continue screening your child for Covid every day. The screener can be found here: https://www.ontario.ca/school-screening/

Triboard Transportation
Families should ensure they are signed up to receive direct notifications, either by email, or Tri-Board’s app. Delays and cancellations are also posted to Tri-Board’s Twitter account.

Cashless Schools - As you know, we are going cashless. Has your family already enrolled in the School Day platform? Thanks for your attention to this and thank you to families who have already registered and linked their students! A reminder that codes are student specific and can be found on the paper forms that have already been distributed. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you need another copy of the form for your child(ren).

Indigenous Self-Identification form and process

This online form is meant to make the Self-Identification process more accessible for students and families, as well as reduce our use of paper across LDSB.

This online form can be filled out on both a computer and mobile device here.

Early ON

The EarlyON Centre within Glenburnie Public School offers a free drop-in program for parents and caregivers with children from birth to 6 years old. Come learn and play with your child, engage in a variety of fun activities, meet other parents in the area, and receive support from Registered Early Childhood Educators.

Currently, the program is open Fridays, 9:30am - 3:00pm, at Glenburnie Public School. Visit www.keyon.ca to register; drop-ins are also welcome! Spread the word. We hope to see you there! You can email earlyon@bgcsoutheast.ca for more information. Follow BGC EarlyON Kingston on Facebook for EarlyON Drop-In program updates.
