Upstanders Rock is coming to MES !
A unique and exciting program with an anti-bullying theme is coming to MES on Thursday, September 14, as part of our corporation-wide "Move To Stand" Week.
Upstanders Rock! is described as a “high energy, interactive assembly that helps students understand that their roles as Upstanders (not bystanders) in their school will help keep their school safe and bully-free.”
Instead of the usual lecture-type assembly, Upstanders Rock! features interactive demonstrations and hands-on challenges designed to motivate students to do the right thing when working or playing with friends and peers.
The program includes invitations for students to dress up as adults and act out ways to report bullying to an adult they trust. Others will join in to create a larger than life "human video game" to demonstrate that life is not like a video game - there are no do-overs. There will also be an activity to show how quickly rumors and unkind words can spread.
The underlying message throughout the entire program is that we all, students, staff, families, must respect each other and work together as Upstanders against bullying.

We would like to wish them the best of luck and encourage everyone to attend and give them your support.

Device Insurance Reminder
Parents - this is a reminder if you have not purchased insurance for your student's electronic device, it is not too late to do so. We strongly encourage everyone to purchase insurance covering your student's device. If you elect not to purchase the insurance, please remember you will be 100% responsible for all damages. If your student's device is damaged we believe you'll be glad you made this $25 investment.
You must go to the Milan website and click on One2One Risk Solutions and either decline or accept. If you do not have internet access please stop in the office and we will be glad to help you.
Parents if you have textbook assistance, please note that Chromebook/iPad claims and/or insurance are not covered by textbook assistance, you are responsible.

COUNSELOR CHAT
MES School Counselor, Mrs. Brenda Schwering
Welcome to another GREAT year at Milan Elementary School! My name is Brenda Schwering, and I have been a school counselor for over twenty years. I look forward to working with your children and offering my support and help to all families at MES!
We are also selling Character Counts balls to raise money for a Pay it Forward Project as we teach the importance of being good citizens, one of the six pillars of character. We are still selling them if your family would like to purchase a ball. The cost is $10.00. We have sold a lot of them so thanks for supporting this very worthwhile project. 4th grade Citizen Club members will help us decide what organization will benefit from this project.
Life can bring a lot of joy but can also be challenging and parenting is one of the hardest jobs ever! I am only a phone call or e-mail away. Please feel free to reach out to me to schedule a time to meet. The phone number is 812-654-2922 and my e-mail is brenda.schwering@milan.k12.in.us. I also post pictures and information on my twitter account @Schweringschool. Please follow me on Twitter!

MES PTO Welcomes New Members!
They are currently conducting the Believe Kids Fundraiser; their major one of the year. Other fundraisers include the Lil Caesar's Pizza Fundraiser in February and the Splash & Dash Triathlon in March.
As you can imagine, all of these programs, so valuable to our children, require a lot of effort. They would appreciate any assistance and extend a warm welcome to any parent, grandparent, or interested community member who would like to join their efforts to benefit our children. Their meeting dates are posted on Facebook or you can join their email list to get the scoop on their meetings and activities. You are invited to attend a meeting to learn more about their group. You will not be pressured to do more if you'd rather not participate.
More information about this wonderful organization can be found by "liking" the MES PTO page on Facebook or by emailing them at mespto15@gmail.com.
