International Week 2023

International week is going to be better than ever this year and we would love for your help! We need parents to help with set up on Tues May 2nd and Monday, May 8th. Then, during the week of May 15th, we'd love for parents to volunteer in the media center and also volunteer to chaperone each class as they visit each country!

Strong for Life

At HFE, we strive to develop self-motivated, globally-minded thinkers through inquiry and reflection. In addition to that, we also strive to have happy and healthy students. This year, our school is partnering with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to bring the Strong4Life program to our students. The program encourages four healthy habits – “Eat Smarter, Drink Water”, “Screens Away, Go Play”, “Get Rest To Be Your Best”, and “Emotions Are Real, Say How You Feel”. In the Fall, the S4L Team put on a pep rally for our students to get them excited about wellness. On February 1st, the CHOA outreach program will be in the building again. This time, the visit is to promote Strong4Life and create excitement around nutrition, physical activity, and emotional wellness. The team will participate in PE in the morning, and then help serve lunch throughout the day – chatting with students about health and wellness. Your child will come home with a Strong4Life t-shirt that is theirs to keep. We are proud to be a Strong4Life school!

Big picture
Welcome! I am looking forward to getting to know and working with your children this year!

Here are a few things about me. This is my 29th year of teaching with the last 23 being at Heards Ferry. It is my 14th year of teaching third grade. I was born and raised in Alabama and am a huge Alabama football fan. I graduated from Jacksonville State University in Alabama. I have a 31-year-old son and a wonderful daughter-in-law. In my spare time, I love to be outdoors kayaking, fishing, riding my bicycle, or hiking. I also love to ride roller coasters and play video games! I have one dog and one cat.

I'm looking forward to watching my students grow and learn this year!

FINDING BOOKS FOR YOUR CHILD TO READ

How can I find a “Good Fit” book for my child?

A quick method for estimating whether your child has chosen books they can read is the Ten-Finger Rule.

Here’s how it works:
Ask your child to read a page or two aloud from the book.

If your child misses only one word out of ten on average- meaning that they can read at least 90 percent of the words- the book is the right level of difficulty.

If your child misses one word out of five on average, the book is too difficult.
