From the Principal's Desk...

Parents and Guardians,

This morning I went over the new COVID guidelines with the students. My goal was to make sure that every student was aware of how we will be handling COVID cases at St. John’s. I feel it is important that the student’s are aware of the changes so they can know the expectations for students and staff. I also told them that if they had any questions about the new guidelines I would be happy to talk through the document with them.

As of this afternoon, we have had numerous students out due to exposures or positive tests from the break. I would expect that this trend will continue as people are just finding out that they were exposed over the last week and they are now being asked to monitor their symptoms. I ask that you err on the side of caution over the next few months. If your child is not feeling well, please keep them home. Due to exposures over the last few days, the following grades must wear a mask for the next 10 days:

  • Kindergarten - masks required through Friday 1/14

  • 2nd Grade - masks required through Friday 1/14

  • 4th Grade - masks required through Thursday 1/13

  • 5th Grade - masks required through Thursday 1/13

  • 7th Grade - masks required through Thursday 1/13

  • 8th Grade - masks required through Friday 1/14

Please make sure to read the documents that were released on Monday (they are also in the newsletter below). If you have ANY questions about what you should do with your child(ren) in regards to a possible exposure or positive case, please reach out to me or the school nurse. I would rather you call and ask me a question instead of sending a student into school who could be a risk to others.

Thank you for your cooperation,

Courtney Weinheimer

Inclement Weather Plans

Inclement weather plans will be announced on the radio/television/social media as follows:

1. We will follow Northwest Schools. If Northwest Local Schools are closed, we will be closed.

2. Two hour delay. This means school will start two hours later than usual. Transportation will begin two hours later as well. If your transportation is provided by Fairfield or Mt. Healthy, you will need to verify that they are on a two hour delay as well. Otherwise, their transportation schedule will not match that of Northwest Local and your student(s) may not be provided a morning bus.

3. Early Dismissal. This announcement would mean the district would be transporting private and public students home early. Parents need to have a contingency plan in order to deal with this circumstance. In addition, parents will need to remain in contact with local media if adverse weather conditions occur during the school day to determine if Northwest Schools is going to transport students home early. The announcement that will go to the media will be “Northwest Schools will Dismiss Early”. The length of the early dismissal will also be announced, such as "1-hour" or 2 hours".

Kindergarten Pageant

On the last day before Christmas break, Mary, Joseph and Elizabeth, along with all the townspeople, shepherds and angels reenacted the story of Gabriel coming to Mary for their kindergarten pageant.

Declaration of Independence

Seventh grade social studies students recently recreated their own versions of the Declaration of Independence. They began their projects by giving their paper an "aged" look using tea, crinkling and singeing. After analyzing the document and rewriting it in their own more modern translation, their last and final step was to have at least 30 signatures on their Declarations.

Mens' Open Gym Basketball

For those guys looking to kick the rust off the gym sneakers, we have men's open gym basketball on Sunday evenings at 9 pm. This is open to any guys looking for a little exercise. We play every Sunday throughout the winter into mid-February (with perhaps the exception around the Holidays and Super Bowl Sunday). We shoot for teams and usually play 5-6 games that last roughly 10 minutes each. If interested, bring both a white shirt and a dark shirt (black/blue).
